Starting to Breed Empty Starting to Breed

Post by KaineHill on Sun 26 Nov 2017, 8:00 pm

Hey there!

I'm new to the forum, so I hope this is the right place to post. (:
Today I received my mice for breeding, however the previous owner only bred for health without paying much attention to color genetics (food mice). That is why I was wondering if I could get some help of you guys to distinguish their genetic codes.

There's a few different age classes and a pretty broad range in color.

Bucks:
1x Argente Piebald
1x Himalayan
1x Tricolor

3 weeks old:
[Father: Argente Piebald, Mother: Black Tan Piebald]
3x Argente Piebald
1x Argente Satin Piebald
1x Agouti Piebald

6 weeks old:
[Father: Tricolor, Mother: BEW]
1x Bone Self
1x Bone Piebald
2x Splashed
3x Tricolor

3 months old:
[Father: Tricolor, Mothers: Agouti Piebald & Splashed - don't know which mice are from which mom]
1x Black Piebald
3x Agouti Piebald
1x Bone Piebald
1x Splashed

4 months old:
[Father: Argente Piebald, Mother: Black Tan Piebald]
1x Argente Piebald
2x Argente Satin Piebald

5 months old:
[Parents Unknown]
2x Sepia Fox (?)
2x Himalayan
1x REW
1x Champagne Tan (?)
2x Blue Piebald

6 months old:
[Parents Unknown]
1x Black Tan Piebald (mom to all the Argentes)

7 months old:
[Parents Unknown]
1x BEW (mom to the 6-weeks-old)
1x Splashed (mom to some of the 3 months old)
1x Agouti Tan

In the following posts I'll try to add some nice pictures of them! Since the little guys just arrived today, I might only get some of them in front of the lens later on.
First one to discuss would be the Tricolor buck. What kind of Tricolor do you think he is? Chocolate? (He's still very splashed too.)

And suiting the buck, here's his splashed and tri-colored daughters:

Also.. are these girls bone/bone piebald?

And these two: Sepia Fox or something else?

If you want pictures of a specific one, just let me know!

Oh and what about this one!? Is it a REW, that's just stained? The other mice are in good condition, so I'm a bit thrown off by her colors.

And two Blue Piebalds I think?

Oh and here's the Himalayan Buck and both Himalayan does. I'm very unsure about the genetics of all the Himalayan/Siam variants and their phenotypes, so I'm not certain at all.

They are all really beautiful mice. I don't know colors but I'm sure other members here can help you. I did want to mention though, I saw in a few of the photos there was that cotton type bedding. That stuff is extremely dangerous to mice and would suggest removing that right away. It can get caught around their legs and cut off the circulation causing your mice to lose limbs. Also, if they ingest any of it by accident, they can choke and die.

Hiya, Can't help with the genetics questions but they are beautiful and this is definitely the right place in the forum to post this question Smile
My first thought was "wow, thats a lot of mice to keep track of!"
Good luck with breeding Smile

Happy to help Very Happy
I don't even know how pet stores are even still allowed to sell that stuff.

I use Carefresh and then I add torn up paper towels and my mouse takes the torn up paper towels into his house for his nest. Love watching him build a new nest after tank cleaning, he is so darn cute! Very Happy

I've also heard some people use torn up toilet paper for nesting material too. Just make sure it basic toilet paper, without any scents.

Looking forward to getting to know you and all your beautiful mice better Mouse Wave

@stephlisa: That's true! But believe it or not, I can actually recognize each one of them now Very Happy (Some only in comparison to their similar counterparts though)

@Rodents Rock: I have the casual cheap bedding right now, however I also own some lovely hemp bedding and bark bedding. I'll first figure out the indefinite group constellation before finalizing the cages though. ^^ However, I exchanged all the cotton with normal bedding and tissues today!

@Peachy: I visited that website before, hence my suggestions of colors. I'm not sure with some of them though, which is why I created this topic. Thanks for the help though! (:

Hey, there! I won't be any help either, sorry, but I want to say: Your mice are beautiful. I wanted to do a little breeding, but my mom said 'NO' unless I started a breeding business to sell the babies for snake food; she said then I could probably find homes for them faster. I'm like, "No way. You know I wouldn't ever do that." Smile

Now, I know snakes need food, too; but they don't have to eat my mice, lol.
