Beefhide? Empty Beefhide?

Post by Bir_b on Sat 23 Dec 2017, 7:52 pm

I got my mice Christmas presents. One of the things I got is VERY small (the size of my mice) beefhides for them to chew. Is this safe? I also got them one of those cat balls w/ a bell in it and I'm gonna figure out how to get the bell out so they can play w/ it. Smile

Hello, I wouldn't give mice beef hides. Raw hide is very difficult to digest. Also, if a piece of it gets lodged in their throat, the rawhide expands with moisture and could choke and kill the mouse.

Oh no!! Oh my gosh. Thank you so much, I was two days away from giving it to them! What's a cheap chew treat I can get instead? Maybe one of those hanging bird toys w/ the rope and wood bits, similar to one of these? https://www.dogspot.in/see-saw-hanging-bird-toy/

Hanging bird toys are normally fine. I give my mouse dog biscuits to munch on. He loves them. Very Happy

I have one more question. One of my mice is acting weird.
Stitch- Slapping my hand w/ both paws or attacking it if it's near her and running away very fast even if I give her a treat, she barely licks it off my finger then slaps it and runs
Lilo- Staying in place to let me pet/pick her up and if she does run it's slow like a game of chase and eventually stopping
I admit I might invade their space a bit, like going into their nest to say hi, but I can stop that. I'm a little concerned about Stitch.

I used to have a mouse who would do that. I would take it as their little way of saying "flip off." She'd usually do it when I got too close to the nest.

Is Stitch biting at all, or just slapping your hand?

Maier used to do that if I didn't use the same exact soap every time before handling her. No other scent was acceptable. She also didn't want me near the nest -- all that said, she was actually very tame. Mice just have a way of telling you what they want.

Sometimes she bites, but not very hard and only the tip of my finger. She does it more at night
