Mister Mischief’s last day Empty Mister Mischief’s last day

Post by ZuzuPants on Sun 16 Dec 2018, 4:59 pm

Hello
I am taking my mouse, Mister Mischief, to the vet tomorrow, and most likely he will have to be euthanized for a neurological condition that has caused him to decline rapidly.

My urgent question is— what can I do for him to make his last day special? He doesn’t want me to touch him, so cuddles would only upset him. But I want to comfort him and give him a good last day. He loves cashews, but I don’t know what else.

What can I do that he might enjoy? What do your mice like, even if it isn’t good for them (because it doesn’t matter at this point if it is fattening or whatever)?

I apologize for leaving your question hanging when getting an answer was so time sensitive. You posted after I left work Sunday, and I have no phone or computer anywhere else.

This must be too late to help, but my advice would be to think back to special things you already know Mister M liked, because to introduce new things might have been more upsetting, both to his tummy and to him personally.

My little April had a crazy compulsion to get at chocolate. If I had chocolate in my mouth, she would crawl around onto the front of my shirt (and I'd have to support her there with my hands so she wouldn't fall), sniff around my mouth, pull down my lower lip, and then try to nose her way in for a look-around! Brownies were like catnip. But, unfortunately, after she did eat some one time, 48 hours later she had a world class diarrhea session -- all over in my hands as I ran to the bathroom with her!

It may actually be more soothing to have familiar SMELLS, rather than familiar foods or other experiences, since they are not as taxing on a weary and hurting little body. As April was resting on my leg, fading away toward Mousie Heaven, she was energized and comforted by the cinnamon bread I had nearby -- it smelled like the office where I worked and that she called home for the first year we were together, because one of my co-workers liked to make cinnamon toast or warm up cinnamon buns in the toaster oven.

Thank you so much for answering! It isn’t too late because Mister Mischief’s symptoms turned out to be a UTI! I feel stupid. But happy! He is angry as hell, because he hates being medicated, but he’ll get over it lol.

I am puzzled about how he would get a UTI, though. He is fairly young, but was bred as a “feeder mouse”, so he doesn’t have the best genes. Maybe that contributed, idk. His cage was cleaned on Friday, but before that it might have been 2 weeks, which is not ideal, I realize... But it wasn’t horrible! I don’t know. I’m baffled and I feel so awful. Poor little guy is probably in so much pain! Thank god for antibiotics.

Also I enjoyed reading your post. The diarrhea story is hilarious! And I like how much love you showed April as she passed. I’ve done a lot of what one might call “mouse hospice”, and that is the kind of loving, compassionate end I would wish for them all. ❤️❤️❤️
