Heated Pine bedding? Empty Heated Pine bedding?

Post by kyara_cresci on Mon 15 Jul 2019, 3:19 pm

Hi everyone!
I got my first mouse about 2 weeks ago. I have a quick question. So I live in Peru (in South America if you aren’t familiar) and unfortunately pet rodents are treated very poorly, mainly seen as pests or snake food. Anyways, here in Peru there is only one affordable bedding that is sold which is pine. I don’t even think they do anything to the bedding and simply collect wood shavings from some store and label it as hamster bedding. What I’ve been doing is heating the shavings in my oven for about 20 minutes until I feel a difference in the scent (it has much less odor than leaving it unheated). I have also tore up some paper towels into bits to imitate kaytee clean and cozy bedding and have that on the side where she sleeps. Oh and I forgot to mention, they actually do sell kaytee clean and cozy in one store but are being sold for around 45 dollars for a small bag. I can’t afford that, I have a 15 or 20 gallon tank and I would go through the bedding very quickly. Anyways I would like some advice on whether or not what I’m doing is okay due to the situation. Or if I should only use paper towels, although I doubt t would work as odor control. There is also one other brand I found! It’s called I believe houtvezel duvo+ wood fibre, pretty sure it’s also pine but at least it’s actually imported and most likely treated unlike the local bags sold here. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I'm not sure about the heated pine, I'd wait for someone else regarding that.

BUT, I can tell you that a paper shredder is your best friend! If you can get a paper shredder, you can use that to shred plain computer paper or paper towels, and use that as a bedding rather than paying for the expensive Clean & Cozy. That's what I use for all my mice, just shredded up paper towels!

The bedding definitely holds up between weekly cage cleanings, honestly it's usually okay for 2-3 weeks if need be although I wouldn't recommend waiting that long between cleans

I agree that shredded paper, paper towels, newspaper, or tissues may be your best bet. They may not be the best as far as odor control but they work well enough to hold up between the recommended weekly full cleaning.
