I believe so! So long as it's regular newspaper and not the glossy pages.

Colored newspaper is what I've (mostly) used for years, though I've seen it advised to avoid free ones. But I'd start with food... Or change it up all at once and then add things back one at a time.
It looks like a lot of foods that have lower protein don't have the best ingredients. What was the protein in the food you planned to switch to? Maybe check out any smaller pet shops for an appropriate food? That's where I found the finch food that I feed. Took a while but everyone seems to enjoy it and it smells wonderful. Giggling

I'd start with food first. Doesn't Brown's have 12.5% protein?

In the U.S. newspaper ink is soy based so it's safe.  Avoid the glossy magazine type pages.

Wheat is actually listed as a common allergen here: http://www.petmousefanciers.com/t15-mouse-diet. Confused

Oh it does say 12.5! When I looked it up earlier it said 14. These foods are so confusing. Thud

I use Browns mouse and rat right now. I was planning to switch to using Vitasmarts parakeet food...anyone know if thats low on protein? Does it have wheat?

Also, sunseed vita dwarf hamster mix - what allergens are in this?

I think I'll change most things by next week and start reintroducing. I don't get newspaper, so I'd have to get the free ones. Should I try that for what, one week? Two weeks? How long?

I should also be getting some Cortaid soon! I really hope it helps while I figure out what's going on. I just don't want it to become OCD if its not already.

I didn't see an answer to this question but: should I just rearrange toys, or add in some news one every couple of days?

I'd change everything at once and try that for two weeks. If the scratching stops you can start introducing things one by one.

As for toys... I would both rearrange things and add a new thing every couple of days. But if they haven't seen a toy for a while it will probably feel exciting and new to the mice, so you can switch things in and out perhaps?

Try making "mouse challenges" - e.g. like wrapping treats in paper, and stuffing that in a tube. Make it difficult for them to get the treats Smile

Brown's mouse & rat has 14% crude protein. Brown's hamster & gerbil has 12.5% crude protein.

Vitakraft parakeet has 12% crude protein, I believe. And yes, it does have wheat. I don't think I've seen a mix without it.

The dwarf mix is listed as 13% crude protein and does contain sunflower seeds and wheat.

I would try a lower crude protein first. Then the wood and such next (or the crude protein and wood at once).  Then worry about possible food allergies.  To me that would be eliminating the more likely problems first. I'm assuming you've already been picking out sunflower seeds and peanuts?

I got Vitakraft since it has the least amount of allergy foods in it. I'll change to cardboard toys tonight too. I should be able to get some shredded newspaper by next week. I'm uncertain though.

Do you think I should change the food slowly as to not upset their stomachs, or is it not really necessary?

By the way, I'm not sure if it was just my petsmart, but they were having a sale on Kaytee Clean n Cozy. I got a bag for 3.00$.

By the way - does any brand of hydrocortisone work, or is it strictly Cortaid brand?

It is usually recommended to change foods slowly.

Usually cortaid goes on open wounds. I'm not entirely sure putting it on dry skin has the same effect. I could be wrong though, but.

Cortaid is used for itching, poison ivy, bug bites, eczema, etc. Cortaid is just a brand name.

I don't know about safety concerns for mice though. I've never looked into it.

Everything has been changed to cardboard. Is the ink on the amazon boxes safe? I have so many amazon boxes, so they'd be easy to make MES's out of. I'm considering making a cardboard wheel stand because otherwise it's just banging on everything.
Does anyone have ideas for cardboard toys?

And, is toilet paper safe to add to the tank while testing for allergies?

I don't know when I'm gonna get back to the store so I can find newspaper. I thought Kaytee was basically just shredded up toilet paper and towels as it is? Ah well.

I don't know what the amazon boxes are like on your side of the pond. Over here they're almost all plain brown cardboard, just with the amazon logo on? In which case you can just not use the printed part if you're worried?

Most cardboard boxes used for packaging food is a safe bet (except for freezer boxes and I can't remember why).

Freezer boxes have chemicals in them to prevent freezer burn.
