Introducing Mitya!! Empty Introducing Mitya!!

Post by Snootietoots on Sat 10 Sep 2016, 7:52 pm

So, I have finally found my first mousie!! There weren't any mice at the SPCA so we went to a store. I got an 8 inch wheel as they didn't have a 6.5 inch one, so it's really big.. Anyway, here he is!

He is very small, maybe about 4-5 weeks old? They reffered to him as a "hopper". I met a fully grown mouse there too, but I still never realized just how small mice really are!
Mitya is very curious, when he isn't sleeping or cleaning. At first he was a little shy, but he climbed onto my hand when I put him into his tank! Smile

Oh, and his little popsicle stick thing - I replaced it with an adorable little wooden house we saw! He hasn't explored it yet, though..

Aww! He is adorable! Congratulations! Hoppers are usually 2-3 weeks old. At 4 weeks old a mouse is already considered an adult. Yep, mice can be pretty tiny! Smile

Thank you! I'm really excited, haha.
And wow, that's so young! He's already so friendly too!

I'm not sure he knows how to use a bottle, though. But I will work on it. To be honest I'm not sure he knows it's there. But he will lap it up from a small dish. Smile

My first mouse, Maier, was 4 weeks when I got her and she still hopped constantly. She didn't stop doing it until she was 10 weeks, so I imagine a hopper could be a bit over 3 weeks? He does look super young, though! I would guess more 4 weeks than 3.

He's so pretty, I love his color.

"Pinkie","fuzzy", "hopper", and "adult" are terms generally used by people who breed mice for feeders. They refer to the ages of the mice. Here is a paragraph on the definition of a hopper by someone who breeds mice for feeders:
Hoppers: Hoppers are within 14-18 days old with fully open eyes. They are starting to eat and drink on their own at this point and range between juvenile and adult, depending on the grams, which generally the hoppers fall between 7.00 and 12.99 grams.
Blossom randomly hops like a little crazy mouse! Yet, she is not considered a hopper, as she is probably around 4-5 weeks.

So maybe around 3 weeks? I'm sure either way he will be growing very fast..

I haven't seen him hop at all, except once in while he will do a kind of "half-bounce" thing while eating. He seems to love his tank though! He hasn't yet explored the top part of his playhouse yet but there is a treat up there when he does.

I haven't been so excited in so long, I'm really glad I made the decision to get a mouse!!

The "half-bounce" is probably him sparking. Similar to a guinea pig popcorning. He's a happy little guy. Bouncy

Ah I'm so glad! I also heard occasional soft squeaks from him last night, when I checked on him at... 2:00am... Is that normal for him to squeak a little? He didn't seem frightened at all. He was just exploring and sometimes I'd hear a little something from him.

First, congratulations! I'm so glad you were able to get you a little mousie! Very Happy Second, my mouse had a hard time figuring out how to use the bottle, too. Right now he drinks out of a ceramic dish, and he gets water on his own. Before I had to be constantly making sure he was getting enough to drink.

He is so cute! Congrats!

I remember when I first got my mouse he would do that occasional squeak thing too. It only lasted like a week, then he stopped doing it. He wasn't hurt or anything, so I assume that it's normal Smile

"Box shock", maybe?  Keep an eye on it though. It could be the start of a respiratory infection. Or may be he's just chatty.
