Ori is allergic to nature
So I have come to the conclusion that Ori is allergic to nature. About two months ago I noticed that Ori was constantly scratching and the my sister while holding her one day noticed that she was covered in bumps and scabs (reminded me of hives). I did some research and decided to remove all potential allergens from her food and to put her on paper bedding versus the shavings she was on. That helped her to recover but I was not happy with the odor control (or lack there of) that Kaytee Clean and Cozy had so I decided to try sterilized dirt once Ori's skin had recovered. Well over this week I noticed her bumps come back and the escalation of the scratching. So she is back on clean and cozy with paper based cat litter as the base to help with odor control. Also to be safe I have only non-wood items like cardboard, the plastic wheels, paper mache, and their hammock.
So yeah no wood, no hay, no dirt. She is a city mouse. I have tried Carefresh but all the batches I were super scratchy and dusty and was not super happy with it personally.
So yeah, Ori is allergic to nature
It is good thing she is so cute. This picture is before all the switching.

Some mice are just like that, I guess!
Lucky me, I've never had a mouse who's been allergic to wood.

What is weird is that for the longest time (she is about a year old) there were no problems with her at all. She was on shavings for about 4 months with no issues but I am guessing something might have changed as she got older or I just didn't notice at first that the shavings were an issue.

Like people, mice can develop allergies at any time! So just because they're okay with something for a while doesn't meant they always will be.

Poor Ori! Glad you were able to figure out the issue and do away with it. She's lucky to have you in her corner.

It is amazing how quickly she is getting better! I changed out the dirt last night and by noon today her bumps are almost all gone!

Having a mouse that's allergic to wood isn't too fun, but luckily, mice love paper mâché. Only problem is everything you give them is shredded in a few days.
If you still want to give tr toys good use, you can hold seperate playtimes and let the others interact with their old toys. Maier loves wood, and Graham is allergic, so this is what I do to let them both have fun.
Also, you know how slowly introducing allergens to other animals and even kids can solve them sometimes? I wonder if that'd work for mice, like adding a bit of popsicle stick every few weeks to let them adjust. Not a risk I'll take just yet, but a curious idea.

Once Ori's skin has had a chance to heal I will probably reintroduce wooden toys to see if she can handle them but for now they are having fun shredding cardboard and collapsing their paper mache house.
That is a good idea River with adding the toys during play time! If, in the long run, Ori cannot have any wood toys I will probably do that.

True of most animals, I'd say. My BooDog didn't develop skin allergies until she was around 2 years old and they just kept escalating year after year until she turned 12 when they simply stopped. Guess her body chemistry changed in her old age.
