I've put in the bedding I was using in her playpen, built up around the edges for her to dig at. She still is far more interested in her houses and toys though, well have to see if the other ladies are diggers.

luckily the desk where I'll be keeping it is right beneath a vent

You don't want there to be direct forced air flow on the tank, especially not from above.

If your tank is right underneath a vent of some sort, you should move it ASAP.

When I say vent, I mean like the little covered heaters usually found in the floor. Like this: http://dailyhomerenotips.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/floor-vent-register-installed-into-tile.jpg It is more than five feet away and doesn't move air significantly. It isn't like standing under a fan or industrial vent.

I just wanted to clarify that the mesh wheels are perfectly safe. The ones that are not safe are the ones with solid metal bars that go across with spaces in between. So the wheel you have in your tank is just fine, no worries.

Also, I was wondering what size that saucer is that you have? It looks like the small one. Mice really need the 7" one (medium) to give them a good running surface. The small ones can do then harm. If the one you have is a medium, my apologies, but if it's a small, it should come out and if possible, be replaced with a larger one.

Otherwise, everything looks great. I agree with the others, quarantine is 3 weeks..... Which is a long time to go without nice soft, warm bedding. If she's going to be in the big tank, she should have all of the amenities

Lola has lots of bedding now, no worries. The saucer is medium but she just doesn't seem to like it anyways; oh well the big mesh wheels are a hit with everyone. Yuki has learned how to 360 herself around the top already, pretty cute!

I'm glad she's having fun. They love spinning around in those wheels. It makes me nervous when all three girls are on at the same time, so I try not to watch!

Re: Moving from 10gal to 75

Post by MimzytheBun on Sun Dec 04, 2016 1:53 pm

I've begun contemplating how I'm going to get all three ladies together in the big tank (still got awhile in quarantine but I'm thinking ahead). I'm a bit worried about Lola being possessive about the space, especially because she is so much bigger than my two little pews. I was thinking around the two week mark, I might switch their cages - put Lola in the 10gal and the two babies in the 75. Then I'll introduce them a week later in a new place for all of them, I'm thinking bathtub. If it goes well, all three will then be together in the 75.
I'm hoping by moving Lola out of the big cage, she won't be as aggressive. But then again, she might be even more possessive if reintroduced after the girls think it is their home... What do you guys think? I'm a bit worried the big space will cause issues :/

That sounds like a good plan, but only swap their cages at the three week mark. The last week of quarantine would be nullified if you have Lola in the PEWs' tank.

Forgive the ignorance, but why? I'm planning to do a full clean of each tank before moving them into the new one. If it is something airborne unfortunately they're side by side (I've only got one room) so it would be too late for that. Undecided

Usually the purpose of switching tanks before introductions is so that the mice can get used to each others' smells before they meet. If you clean the tanks first, moving them won't be an issue with quarantine. Though usually, you want to at least keep mice across the room during quarantine.

Well if you clean the tanks first, there's no point in swapping them. Cleaning would nullify any benefit they would receive.

I wanted them to get used to the size, not the smell. I don't want them to be overly timid in the space where Lola is confident, I think it would lead to a lot of dominant behaviour.

I'm not sure that would make any difference really.

I think it would actually make it worse. Changes like you are describing, can be stressful. Meeting new nice is already stressful, I wouldn't add to that.

Your single lady might have the home court advantage... But you're bringing in 2 mice so they have strength in numbers. Sounds fair enough to me.

If you want them to get used to each other, you can swap out their nest boxes or a handful of bedding. All mice want to do is sniff each other, so getting used to smells can help with intros.
