New Mouse Mom
Hello!
I'm Harmony and I am a new mom to a little male mouse I have named Bert. I wanted to join a community where I could learn about this little guy and figure out the best way to give him an enriching life. Plus, I figured I'd get to ogle lots of mousy cuteness here
So far I have a 10 gallon tank set up for him with a wire cage topper. I've had him for 2 weeks now so I'm just starting to learn a few of his likes and dislikes. I did buy him from a pet store before I had done any research into them and I regret that, but I am still glad to be giving this sweet boy a home because he deserves the good life right? =]
Here's my Bert, and it is nice to meet you all!

Re: New Mouse Mom
Welcome! Many of us have mice that originated from pet shops, so no worries there.
It sounds like you're doing well, and Bert is adorable!! I look forward to seeing you around.

Welcome to the forum! Bert is adorable :-D
Its okay him coming from a pet shop, the way I see it they still need loving homes too. My Colin came from a pet shop too!

Bert looks like a real sweetie and, as others have said, many/most of us have gotten our mice from pet shops as local reliable breeders are hard to find. Due to their "mass production" lineage, pet shop mice tend to be less genetically robust than breeder mice but make wonderful pets nonetheless. Be sure to read the threads on safe foods as there are many things mice should never eat and other foods that may trigger allergic reactions, especially in pet shop mice. You'll have a lot of fun creating a "busy" tank for Bert so be sure to check out the Housing Pictures and MES (Mouse Entertainment Systems) threads.

Re: New Mouse Mom
Hello, welcome to the group! Good breeders are hard to find, so most of us get our mice from pet stores or rescues. As much as I hate supporting bad breeding practices... Those innocent little mice need homes, too.
Your Bert is adorable! I love the name. I have a hamster that I call Bert. Her full name is Orange Sherberta (lol). Anyway, feel free to ask any questions. See you around

Re: New Mouse Mom
Aaaa Bert is so cute! Look how happy he looks to have a treatie.
Don't feel bad about the pet store- 99% of the time you're saving a pet store mouse from a fate in something's stomach or whatever happens when the recipient of a stupid frat prank is startled by a mouse.
Plus, to be honest, it can really be difficult to find a breeder. The fancy in the USA is dedicated but pretty small, and even then it seems like a lot of breeders get out of mice for another species- often rats, which of course are wonderful and interactive pets- but just not the same, you know? Like I can have Flynn right now and he's easy to keep happy but if I had a pair of rats they might get bored or not have enough running room when I go to work. Flynn runs in his wheel and is as happy as a clam and then later when I make Mouse Wonderland in the tub he's more than exercised and ready for nap time.
That said, one day I WILL have satins, darnit! If I have to go to a show 3 states away I will do it. *plots*
