My foster mouse Minnie has a sore she keeps touching.

Post by Corissa on Tue Dec 27, 2016 1:43 pm

I have had Minnie for about 2 weeks. She was in an aquarium with 2 other mice (probably female) . As we were putting them in their brand new cage . I specifically asked the pet store if the 'Living world small pet starter was proper for mice. He reassured me it was. In the first 2 hrs in their posh new home 2 escaped! A corpse was found the next morning...the other is still missing. Now I was sure that the 3rd could not escape I brought her home. I didnt like the 'Living Worlds' cage ..I thought it was to drafty. . So I went and bought the National Geographic Whirly whirl. I really like this cage ...it took her a bit to get enough nerve to come back down the tube..up was no problem. So at first I had to dismantle the tubes to put her back in the living area. I got frustrated and blocked the tubes so she wouldn't get stuck. Until yesterday when I was cleaning her cage. She is still scared of me . So I let her go up in the tubes and the sky wheel, while I changed the bedding and cleaned her silent wheel.(she has 2 wheels, and absolutely loves them.) So when I was done and she can smell fresh treats and her favorite foods..she came down ! Now she doesn't have to dwell on her lost mates and get depressed. I hope. She looks basically healthy..but i noticed a red aggressive patch on her arm. She keeps touching it with her mouth. I have a snapshot of it but there is no place to put it on this link. All I want is to give her a place to live in peace .Her last place was pretty gross. It wasn't cleaned for at least 3 mo...thats with 2 others as well. Please tell me I can help her.

Several things...

The first thing that alarmed me: "Probably female?" Did you not check for certain that all the mice you had living together were definitely female? If you had even one male in there, then your mouse is pregnant, and if there had been more than two, the males could have maimed or killed each other. Part of responsible mouse care is knowing for certain the genders of your mice. They have different requirements, and mixups can be problematic at best and fatal at worst.

Secondly, move your mouse back into the aquarium she was living in. They are by far the best homes for mice, and there are little to no safe and good wire cages for mice in the US. Plastic tubes in cages are dangerous, as mice can get stuck in them and panic, and they get filthy and are nearly impossible to clean. The aquarium was the best setup for her. They're safe, have good ventilation, and as long as you have a proper screen top with locking clips, are 100% inescapable.

Thirdly, is the third mouse still missing? Are you still actively looking for her? Leave bowls of food and water around the house so she can find them and stay hydrated and fed until you can rescue her.

And fourthly, can you post a picture of this patch? It could be an injury, a hot spot, or something else, but no one will be able to tell without a photo. It may even need to be seen by a vet. There are instructions on posting photos in the Picture section.

And fifthly, as she is a female, she will eventually get depression without companionship. Once we figure out this rash problem, I would look into getting her some new FEMALE companions.

Like I said ...there was 3 ...so in all likely hood they r female. I took them on because no one else would.
I am going to take her to a vet. I think the reason she keeps bothering her arm is out of loneliness. As well as something is definately wrong. Im in Vancouver BC ....do u happen to know where I can take her.

As for the 3rd mouse ...yes there is food and water out for her. Its not an easy task bc where she escaped is in the lobby office of a hotel, the space is huge. So many rooms and wild mice.

Thank u for your feedback...I was going by what I read in different sites, not from actual mice mommies and daddies.

Look in a phone book or online directory for vets that are near you. It might take a bit of calling around, but hopefully you'll find a vet that's willing to see mice.
