Cold Mouse?

Post by Degare on Thu Dec 29, 2016 1:44 am

Okay - starting with the situation.

I was gone nearly all day yesterday at a (late) xmas party.
I got home, and went straight to bed.
The next day (today) I got up early and was out all day with my mother.

This evening, I went to go play with Pumpkin.
I lifted her little igloo to get her out, and she didn't respond.
She just sat there in a "I'm half-asleep" state (eyes half-open).
I touched her, and she was ice-cold and not moving.
I thought she was dead.

I picked her up, and I could feel her vibrate and breathe.
I cradled her in a closed hand-cup, and exhaled hot breath on her for a good 5-10 minutes.
She sat there and let me do it, and every 1 second, would vibrate (shiver?).

At the end of this warming up session, she was re-vitalized.
She's bright eyed, happy to be with me, and wanting to see my house as I explore for her.
She's now fine, back in her cage, and grooming all my hand oils off of her fur.

What the hell happened, and how to I prevent this in the future?

Was she just too cold?  Our house is at a steady 68 F...
But if that were the case, wouldn't she have been that cold at some other point..?
Was she depressed because I hadn't played with her in so long?

I'm glad she's okay now, but I have the feeling that another hour or so without my body-heat, and she would have died.  Worry

It sounds like she was depressed to me. Female mice require the company of other mice; human contact alone is not enough for them. Two females is the bare minimum you should have, and at least three is recommended. While depression itself is not lethal, the stress it causes for the mouse significantly weakens their immune system and can leave them much more susceptible to illnesses which can in turn more easily kill them. It can also lead to psychological problems like OCD which is incredibly painful for both mouse and owner to endure.

I would recommend getting at least one more female mouse ASAP.

This has been suggested to me multiple times in my (two days?) of being on this forum. I showed this to my other half, and we just came back home (10 minutes ago?) with another female mouse from a pet-store.

Their introduction went well, and I'm hoping it will help in the future.

It's good that their introduction went well! In the future, however, you should take note to keep any new mice in a three-week quarantine to make sure that they have no health issues that they could pass on to your other mice. But since they've already been introduced to one another, you may as well carry on.

Congrats on your new girl! Don't stress over not quarantining too much, but keep it in mind for next time. Smile

We would usually recommend separating them again for the remainder of quarantine, but if you decide you rather wouldn't, double check their sexes, keep an eye out for either of them showing symptoms of any illness, and watch for pregnancy or babies within the next 3 weeks.

I wouldn't split them up now, since any beneficial affects a quarantine could have are already out the window. Keep an eye on Pumpkin, check your new mouse to make sure she is truly a female, and keep an eye out for any diseases. Hopefully Pumpkin will cheer up. Good luck!
