Hello all!
We are new to having pet mice, just bought two sweet girls last week. I'm looking to see if any of you have any this for me and my family on how to care for them. One of the issues we are currently having, is that they smell. I had read before buying that female mice didn't smell as bad as males, but I find myself cleaning out or trying to freshen their cage in a daily basis. It is a glass tank, and we are using bedding that is supposed to help control smells, but maybe I'm not using enough? There also seems to be a large amount of poop pellets everywhere in the cage. Is that normal? We've only had them a week, so I keep telling myself maybe they just aren't settled in yet or something. They are friendly, and seem to be making strides on letting us handle them.
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. I'm so glad to have found this group, as we had a hamster several years ago, but are very new to having mice as pets.

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on your new mice!!!

This page has links to a lot of the information around the forum, so you don't have to search around too much. Smile

This page specifically talks about cleaning, odor, and bedding:

For the first couple weeks, while your mice are adjusting to new foods and a new environment, they might be a little extra smelly. This usually resolves, but in the meantime, the tips in the link I shared should help a bit. Some owners also find that filtered water (rather than tap water) help with stink.

Welcome to the forum! Pet shop mice always STINK the first few days, but it goes away so long as they're getting good food and clean bedding.

Welcome Crew
I'd like to add that deep cleans should be done weekly with mice, rather than every few weeks like with hamsters. This means removing all the bedding, filling the tank with fresh bedding, and cleaning all the smelly toys. Peachy linked to a great section of the forum, it should help a lot. The second link she linked to has all the information you need on cage cleaning, helping with smell, etc..
