Back sores/scabs?
This is Saber. He is five months old, and lives by himself in an aquarium. He eat Tiny Friend's Farm mouse food, which he hasn't had a issue with previously. Recently I've noticed several scab-like wounds on his back.I'm am confused to where this is coming from. There's no one else there to bite him, and he doesn't seem to be over-grooming himself. He had been on aspen bedding, so I changed him over to carefresh today. But I'm not sure it's a bedding allergy... he'd been on aspen his whole life with no problems until now. Any ideas on how this came to be? How should I care for this?

Has he ever been treated for mites or other parasites? That's what it looks like to me. These types of scabs can also be triggered by bedding or food allergies, too much protein, etc. With a bedding allergy, you're likely to also find thin or no hair on their belly.

Re: Back sores/scabs?
Thanks Peachy and Scaredy. His food contains 14% proteins which could potentially e too much... but is ithere the cause? His belly is fluffy and normal, so it may not be bedding after all. I don't see any parasite/mites but only a vet would be able to to ell for sure.
@scaredy he's super chubby and fluffy! I'm sad he's looking a bit decrepit as of late, but hopefully he'll be back in tip top shape soon.

14% is on the high side for sure and could be causing it. A lot of us feed vitaktaft vitasnart parakeet food to our mice. Its low in protein and they love it. Then I add healthy treats to their diet like flaxseeds, meal worms, nuts, cheerios, Gerber puffs.
Ivermectin is safe, so i would run the course of ivermectin, switch up the food and keep him on the soft bedding.

I believe Scaredy meant to type VitaKraft VitaSmart. Here's the link to it at Pet Smart: http://www.petsmart.com/bird/food-and-care/food/vitakraft-vitasmart-parakeet-food-3918.html

Re: Back sores/scabs?
I was talking to fellow mousier (who manages a pet store) and she recommended bag balm. A healing balm that is safe if injested, and will suffocate mites (if there really any). I'm going on give it a try.

Re: Back sores/scabs?
I'm familiar with bag balm, I use it on my chinchillas feet when they get dry. I imagine is safe for mice, too, but I don't think it can eradicate mites. Sure, it may smother any mites that may be beneath it but it won't do anything for mites on other parts of the body or in the tank. But it may help his boo boo heal up.
