Swollen lip, desperate for help!
My little fancy mouse, Zippy, has a very swollen bottom lip for the last 2 days. I am scared it could be infected. He has been eating and drinking just fine. I cannot find a vet that will treat mice and I don't know what to do. He is 3 years old and is an only mouse. Does anyone know of a topical over the counter treatment I could put on his lip? Thanks for any help!

I'd recommend searching for exotic vets in your area - there's probably one nearby, or at least in a neighboring city. If there's only basic vets, consider calling. Even a vet not specialized in exotics can be helpful in emergency cases.
Have you tried examining his mouth for broken teeth? Is he chattering, or producing any mucus? What bedding is he on, and what food is he eating?
I can't think of many things it could be. There's the potential for a broken tooth, a URI, some other form of infection, or merely just allergies. I'd expect an antibiotic would be the best route of treatment, but I'm no expert.
EDIT: I did a quick search of the internet and found a similar case where the swelling went down after a couple of days - not sure what happened, but the mouse lived and the swelling fell without any veterinary interference. I wouldn't take the risk, but this could certainly be comforting if you absolutely cannot find any vet nearby.

Thank you so much for your reply. It is comforting that you heard of another case that had a good result. He has had the same bedding and food as long as I've had him. He has critter care paper bedding and Kaytee gourmet variety diet. If I couldn't see his lip, I'd never know something was even wrong with him. No chattering, no drooling. His teeth looked a liiiiitle long so I gave him a fresh chew stick and uncovered his chew blocks.I have been calling vets since I got off of work. I took a mouse I had before to banfield and they treated him but turned me away this today. I'm going to keep searching. Thank you again for your quick reply.

Here's a vet I found through Vetective. I don't know how close they are to you, but if they can't help perhaps they could recommend someone who can. (I assume
Rva means you're in Virginia. lol) Their website says they see exotics and pocket pets.
