Hamster food preferences?
I recently adopted a baby fancy bear Syrian that was born at the pet store where I work. Just wondering if you guys that keep hamsters have a food brand preference? So far I've been using Brown's Tropical Carnival hamster food.
Also, can they basically have the same fresh food treats as mice?

There is no one food that is suitable for hamsters, you'll have to mix food. My hamster eats a mix of Higgins Sunburst Hamster and Gerbil food + Mazuri Mouse and Rat food. If you mix a bag of each of those together, voila! Perfect diet. Yeah, my hammy pretty much gets the same treats as my mice. Just keep in mind they pouch everything, and some things can pose dangers if pouched, such as live mealworms (live mealworms should never be fed to hamsters).
Here's some info from Hamster Hideout:
Protein - 17% - 19% for most adults, 20% - 24% for growing animals under 6 months
Fat - 4% - 7%
Fiber - 6% - 15%

That. ^
Though at the moment I have a crazy mix of 3 different commercial foods, mealworms, and krill/chicken - just because I'm a bumbling idiot.
I should have planned ahead better - I usually do but now and then I just plow headlong into something. But yeah, the suggested mix of 1 bag Higgins Sunburst and 1 bag Mazuri is the simplest way to get within guidelines and provide decent variety.
I'll probably stick to using dried bugs/meat to boost protein in the future. Takes a little more time and calculation but it's another option. But I have a lot of food to get through first, so I haven't even begun to plan it out.
