Mouse-tropolis

Post by Mousetropolis on Sat Apr 08, 2017 11:05 pm

Hello, everyone! I'm Kida, and I have three lovely little mice. I had one little male when I was a kid, Mickey(don't laugh, I was five  Razz  ), and I remember being pretty fond of him. Last summer I got the cutest hamster, and that made me want mice even more. This past February I picked up my trio from a great small pet store nearby and I've been having a ton of fun with them. They were young when I got them, my guess was about 20 days. They live in a 30-gallon tank and I've made them huge, extensive cardboard structures for their walls. They love them! I'm in the process of designing them a little maze, too. I joined the forum hoping to find more fun things for my little ones to do, and also to talk to other mouse lovers Smile
I may also have a liiittle bit of a taming problem. These are my girls:
Tweaker photo Tweeker_zpskvtvspwg.jpg
Tweaker Squeaker(Tweak) is the most energetic, and the friendliest. She was pretty curious about me from the get-go, she was the only one who was willing to come up and sniff me within the first few days. At this point, she's still not fond of me scooping her up, but she readily takes treats, comes up to me when she sees me, and sometimes she walks into my hand on her own. We have great play time outside their tank, she loves to crawl all over me and sit in my hood.
Munster photo Munster_zps6zgoctka.jpg
Munster Mouser is more shy, but she's just a sweetie. I thought she was silky at first, but after I got her home I realized that it's just really clean. Munster spends a lot of her time grooming herself and the other girls. She's still not too sure about me, but she's coming around. I scatter feed, so she knows that my hand is the food-bringer. Thanks to Tweak's encouragement, Munster's willing to come up to me and sniff my fingers, and take a treat every once in a while, but she's still a little too nervous to want to be picked up. Her out of tank time is mostly spent by herself, exploring my bed. It's slow progress with her, but she'll get there.
Bogart photo Bogie_zpsssukkcjv.jpg
And then there's Bogart. My Bogie Bear, she's a bit of a shrew. Any time there's any kind of squabbling in the tank, Bogie is involved. She doesn't much like to share. Munster usually avoids her altogether and just hangs around with Tweak. While the other girls have gotten progressively friendlier as I interact with them, Bogart always runs away. She knows I'm the one who feeds her; when she sees my hand come down into the tank to feed them, she hides somewhere that she can watch me and comes out to forage as soon as I'm gone. Occasionally I'll set a treat right in front of her hiding place for her, but she just glares at me and refuses to eat that piece because I gave it to her. She kicks it aside and finds another. She doesn't get as much time out as the other two, I try to have her out at least once a week, but even that little is hard because she's just so elusive.
Now I understand if she doesn't have a really friendly personality and she may never like to play with me like Tweak does, but it'll be much easier to clean their tank if I don't have to dig around for Bogie. Anybody have any ideas on how I can get her to trust me a little more?

Welcome3

My main advice for Bogart is just time and patience. Keep taking her out for play time, even if it is a bit of a pain to get her out. You can use a tube or box to transfer her over to a safe play area and then from there just keep offering your hand and be patient with her. She may come around or she may be the type of mouse that's never going to really be into spending time with people. Either way play time out side of her home does her some good. Smile

Welcome! You have lovely girls. Smile

This thread has some more info on taming. There's a sort of "game" described that sometimes helps mice get used to being handled and scooped up. Good luck.
