Have you ever heard of this?

Post by essentiallysue on Tue Apr 11, 2017 10:18 pm

My older mouse, Betty, who is living with a younger mouse, Lily, lately has been removing all of the food (fresh and dry food) from the two feeding dishes and hiding it somewhere. She gets up earlier than Lily and soon has all the food gone. If she were a hamster, I could understand her pouching it, but she's a mouse! Is she keeping Lily from eating? I don't know. So tonight I put an extra dish of the food, just enough for Lily, on top of one of the houses because she can get up there and Betty can't. I clean out the cage every 10 days or so, am I to find a large stash in a corner?? Am I to find a skinny Lily.
They used to chase each other, but for quite some time, there has been none of that, and they seem to be getting along well. But what is this new trick?

Teehee Maybe she just wants to move it. Can Lily still get to it? Does Betty try to keep her from it? If not, I wouldn't worry. Mice do odd things sometimes. My girls jump in their food bowl and kick everything out, then jump out and eat off the floor. I imagine they like to have everything laid out before they take their pick. lol

Last night I put a 3rd dish in, and they emptied it too. This morning, they are both up and Lily is eating out of the new supply. I guess they are just opening a store in the corner. Under-the-House Grocery. LOL

Lol, kooky little things aren't they! Please come back and tell us what you find on cage cleaning day. I love hearing about the wacky stuff mice do. I have a boy who also kicks out all his food and eats off the floor. His bowl is always empty. To decide whether to feed him it not, I have to check how full his neighbors bowl is to see how much food he "probably" has. And I have another boy who I see carry food away and stash in a secret location, like a hamster. Weirdos.

At least they're getting along!

I bet you'll find a stash on cleaning day. Laughing Let us know.

I usually find some food on cleaning day. It helps me judge if I've been over or under feeding. If I don't see any food, I know I need to up the amount. If I see a lot of food, I scale back a bit. If it's just a little, it's just right.

When my newest mice were still in quarantine, they'd leave all the buckwheat. Some in the bowl and the rest hidden in the bedding. Little brats. But now that they're with my other mice it's not been a problem. Not sure if they finally started eating it or if my older girls are just finishing it off. Laughing

Well, last night I cleaned out their cage. Under one of the big houses I made, was a big stash. Since I was putting them in another cage that I had ready, I sprinkled new dry food all over the floor so she would think it was their stash. When I put in their food dishes for dinner and breakfast this morning, nothing has been moved.
I thought maybe they didn't like the newer house that I put in the other one's place because it wasn't like the one they hid their food in, so I made another one exactly like the one they used to hide their stash. We'll see what happens tonight.
