Is It Normal To Gain Weight With Age?
Just curious!
Maier must have steadily gained weight cause I didn't really notice. I ended up thinking she'd always been chubby! However, I came across a picture of her aged 4-5 months and she was so much smaller! Now she's close to her first birthday. Is it normal to gain weight with age? I don't feel anything, she's active, has a good appetite and remains healthy. Just curious!

Yeah, a lot of them get chunky with age. I'd say at least half of mine get fat.

Same. I haven't had a lot of mice yet, but I'd say most of mine at least got a little "fluffier" with age.

Yeah, my Clover was a skinny little thing when I brought her home, and she just kept getting bigger and bigger, now she's huge, but she is a brindle so that could partly contribute to it... Most of my mice are a little chubbier than young, skinny mice though, except for my newest trio of girls and Holly.

Oh yeah. My mice that truly became obese and not just a little extra fluffy, two were brindle and I suspect that Celyn and Rina must carry that gene too even though they're agouti. Though Celyn has trimmed up some, so she's no where near as fat as Rina is or Hashbrown was. Daryl was about where Celyn is.

Daisy is the biggest mouse I've ever seen, do you think she carries the brindle gene? She's so huge, she's bigger than Clover, who is obviously a brindle. Daisy doesn't show brindle, she's just yellow with a white belly and some white spots, so broken yellow, but it could be a gene that's just in her and not showing right? I can't think of any other reason she's so big, they eat VitaKraft VitaSmart Parakeet and I don't feed them too many fatty treatsCallaLily wrote:AnonymousMouseOwner wrote:now she's huge, but she is a brindle so that could partly contribute to it...

She could just be a very poorly marked brindle, I think. I believe @Peachy has had some yellow mice that suddenly showed brindle and I think I've read about some yellows that were sootier when very young but show no sign of it when older.
I'm not really 100% sure how that gene works. I just know, from pics, that Celyn and Rina's father looked like a broken brindle to me, even though I think the gentleman I got them from referred to him as a different coloring. I think he said yellow or fawn, I can't really remember. But he also called the girls "gray" when they're definitely agouti. Their mama was a PEW. Two in that litter were black, all the rest were the same color as Celyn and Rina (13 total, 8 boys). Hopefully someone with more knowledge in this sort of thing pops in with a definite answer about the possibility of carrying the gene without looking brindle.
EDIT: Guess I remembered wrong. Here's a screenshot of their dad.

And a cute one of mom and older babies.

Also there were 12 total, so 7 boys. My memory sucks.
And sorry I've strayed so far off topic.

I kind of love the chubby look. So squishy! Good to hear its normal.
Do you have any photos of Clover that compares her size to something? Just curious! I love seeing big mice.

Well, I have a photo Daisy compared to my smallest mouse, Holly. I do also have a collage of pictures of Clover as she grew, on this thread here:

She's even bigger now though:

Here's Daisy and Holly:
