Safe way to keep them cool?

Post by Mousietale on Wed Jun 21, 2017 2:39 pm

Hi guys

It's unbearably hot in England at the moment and AC isn't really a thing over here.. I am doing my best to keep my girls' home cool, putting fans on, keeping windows open.. But it's still hitting close to 30C in here at times and I feel for them being stuck in a fur coat all the time. They don't seem phased by it at all but I'm still a bit worried.

Is there anything I can give them that's safe for them which will help keep them cool??

Thanks guys

It says on the "Proper housing" sticky that mice do well in temperatures 65-80 degrees Fahrenheit. If the conversion is correct, 30 degrees Celsius is 86 degrees Fahrenheit. If you already have fans going for them, it would probably be even cooler, so I think they should be fine. It has been about 110 degrees Fahrenheit where I am (about 43 degrees Celsius), and my mice have been ok, it stayed about 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit in the room where they were, which seems pretty hot for them, but I put a fan in the room, gave them some frozen treats, and they laid up against the glass to stay cool. Another way to cool them down is to freeze some of their ceramic toys if you have any, then if they are too hot they can go lay in the nice, cold ceramic hide/toy. Ceramic tiles work too Smile

Mickey has been hot too. Here in Flagstaff AZ, a mountain town in Northern Arizona, most people don't have air conditioning, including me. It's been in the low 90's here for the past week which is unusually hot for here. I put a tile in Mickey's tank and that does seem to be a comfort to him in this heat.

Another thing that I saw is draping a cool towel/rag over the cage. That seems to work for some mice (As long as the towel/rag isn't dripping water into the cage) I know this might sound weird but put the towel/rag in the fridge or something? Laughing
