Confused about sexing the babies

Post by muisjes on Thu 22 Jun 2017, 5:10 pm

I have two litters (18 babies) together of 12 and 10 days old. I checked them by the nipple method and found only one with nipples. Has any one ever had this happen or am I going crazy? 1 female and 17 males? Seems odd. I usually sex then when they are 4 weeks old by quietly observing them. When the males are relaxed it is easy to spot their testicles. Never had an oops litter through this.

It would be rare to have that many males but certainly not impossible. If you really wanted to, you could take pics of their bits and we could give you a second opinion. Many of us have had litters before and know what we're looking at Smile

I have had mice for more than 30 years and know how to sex them. It has happend once more when I wanted to keep a male from a last breeding and all I got were 6 females. Today I checked them again: only one with nipples and these were well defined. I will keep all of them until they are 4 weeks and then re-evaluate. Of course, all the interesting colors are males.
