No more mouse smell
For years I haven't had a mouse smell in the house. How did I do that? Mine are in a 20 gallon tank that I fill with natural forest soil, branches, grass sods, moss etc. Since the soil is moist I give them a house that is water proof with some newspaper in it. Then they go to work. They dig tunnels, under ground chambers that are supported by branches and grass roots, hay etc. Soon the soil level goes way up because of all the tunnels and chambers they created. No wheels needed to stay in shape.
And the good thing: no more mouse odor as the natural soil microbes take care of that. When the soil dries out I enliven the microbes by misting the soil when the mice are asleep. If you don't have access to natural soil, you can buy organic potting soil for this purpose.
None of my mice in all the 30 years have ever gotten sick. It is awesome to see their natural instincts at work.
Caution: be careful that the water nozzle won't be buried in the soil or it will siphon empty. Instead I have the nozzle through the cage's cover in an old tin can to keep it upright. They can reach it by climbing on a branch. When all their work has come to a standstill I put in more grass sods or other stuff they and you like.
I change the cage with new soil about every two months, not because it smells but there are still poopies in there.
By the way: babies are raised on aspen shavings, otherwise I will never see them in the underground nursery. They go on soil once they are tame.

Hi, that all sounds very interesting and fun for the mice. Can you send photos of your mice and the set ups? Would love to see.
