Latest you can breed a female?

Post by muisjes on Mon Jul 10, 2017 11:48 am

I have two female Himalayans who are just over a year old. They were, I thought, the end of the line. Up shows a male baby in a random litter at our wildlife center. Can I breed him to them? is it safe at this older age? They are super healthy, big and strong

Have they had litters before? It's not advised to breed that late, especially if they have had no litters before. Usually, the prime time for females to have litters is between 3 months and 8 months. At one year old, they're about 40 years in human years.

They have not had a litter. What are the risks?

The same risks and potential birthing complications as all pregnancies have... Any mouse could have a litter of stillborns, get a baby stuck, etc. And these complications can lead to not only a whole litter of dead babies, but a dead mother too.

Growing babies and giving birth is hard. Just because they can do it doesn't mean they should. Check out this link for more info about the basics of breeding!

Ok, doesn't look like a good idea so I won't breed them. Thank you.
