I'm new here.
Hi, My name is Emily, but you can call me whatever you want. Ever since I got my bearded dragon Sebastian, my brother and I were commenting on how much floor space a 40 gallon breeder tank provides, and we both talked about the possibility of him getting mice again. He has had mice in the past, and might give them another shot sometime. I would like to do some research for him, since I personally like researching animals, and mice don't seem to hard to take care of. I currently have a rat, and they seem very similar.
Can someone tell me a bit about daily care of mice for me? I'd like to know a bit more,
also, do they have to be handled? Rats have to be taken out at least 2 hours a day, but I haven't heard anything about mice yet.
Thanks for your time!
Regards,

Welcome!
There's a lot of info on mouse care linked in this thread: https://www.petmousefanciers.com/t1230-pet-mouse-care-threads. Let us know if you have any questions after reading through those.
If you have a group of female mice, technically you don't have to handle them regularly, but it would surely make it easier if you ever need to take them to the vet or medicate them (and chances are you will). I personally recommend a minimum of 30 minutes a day, others may suggest more or less. You can do this all in one go or split it into smaller sessions. For girls I like to use a designated safe play area with lots of toys and interaction from me - but mainly because very few of my girls ever seem to like hanging out on me for very long. Others have had a different experience though so depends on the individual mouse. Males must live alone so will need daily interaction from their person. Personally I think 30-60 minutes a day minimum for them is best. Split into two sessions or more, whatever works for you and the mouse. I've only had one boy so far and he loved hanging out in my hood or sleeve so that's mainly how we did play time. Do keep on mind that they shouldn't go longer than 30 minutes without access to water.

Welcome! That's funny because my name is Emily too! Now that's out of the way haha. It really depends on the mouse if they liked to be handled or not. I've never actually owned a mouse, but like you i've been doing research. If you get a male, he will need someone to entertain him, the only thing about this is, male mice are also usually territorial of the cage, so getting them out may take a little time, especially to get used to you. For females, they are usually entertained in their other female friends, but most also enjoy being handled. As of daily routine, like I said haven't owned mice. But food and water at all times should be available. Really the best thing is just checking on the mice/mouse a lot and just to make sure that they are doing well! I also recommend everything CallaLily said as well. That time sounds good as minimum, but whatever works for your life style.

Welcome to the forum!
I go with at least a minimum of 15 minutes a day for girls, but boys will definitely appreciate more! 30 minutes once or twice a day is the norm around my house. We'd love to see pictures when you guys get them!

All mice are different, I have a male mouse and he has never ever been territorial of his tank. He is a really sweet boy and has always been friendly.

Yes, I totally agree, you have to love them for who they are as they are all individuals
