Worried about temporary accommodation and old toys
Hi guys sorry this might be a long one. So I'm trying to eliminate anything Annabelle might be allergic to and one thing that's struck me is every day I put all 3 girls in a large plastic box ( of the type some people make mouse housing out of) obviously it doesn't have a lid. But it doesn't have any ventilation in the sides ( when people make them into houses, they cut a bit out and put mesh on right?) well sometimes they're in there for a couple of hours whilst I do their weekly cage clean and at least 45 mins when I spot clean each evening. Could this be a problem? I spot clean the box too and give it a clean out every so often and it has substrate in the bottom and toys and I offer them water every so often so they don't get dehydrated. Also how long is too long to keep wooden and cardboard toys?

Re: Worried about temporary accommodation and old toys
I have my winter white hamster in a bin cage with no lid at all. So since I don't have any lid on it I didn't cut out the sides for ventilation since its open all the time anyway. It would have just as much, if not more ventilation than a tank with a screen lid. So I don't think that is a problem at all. I would say to get rid of cardboard and wood toys when the get too soiled, the timing would vary with your mice.

Re: Worried about temporary accommodation and old toys
I use a storage bin for play time or to hold the mice during cleaning, no lid when I'm right there and I didn't cut into the sides. Plenty of ventilation (much like a tank) and as long as you clean it as needed, I don't think it would cause any problems.
I agree that timing will vary with when to toss cardboard and wooden toys. You just have to use your best judgement on whether or not the toys need chucked. Some wooden toys you can get away with giving them a soak and a scrub to stretch out their use.

Re: Worried about temporary accommodation and old toys
Thanks guys that's really reassuring and I think I've been sensible with the toys. They never pee in their cardboard tubes so I've just kept using them throwing out the odd one that smells extra mousie. Just missing being able to use wooden toys but changed the set up slightly last night and the girls seemed to like it:) really need to learn how to make hammocks and make some more ropes cos it's climbing they love so much. Both of you have been so helpful I'm so grateful for all your advice x
