Re: Wait for adoption or make another choice?
Makes sense. Most of my local mom and pop pet shops don't sell mousies cause they're not popular enough, harrumph. I figure if the large chain store offers back-room creatures for free, you aren't supporting their business practices. But you're worried about longevity? Did you ever shoot a message to that breeder then?
Hmmm, I can understand the desire to rescue a feeder mouse, but I suppose if you asked for one (under the guise of using it to feed your fake reptiles) there's the risk it could be a boy... Or a pregnant female, as you said. Hopefully they aren't selling ill or injured mousies as feeders though :/
I had another thought. Often there are people selling feeders on craigslist and kijiji. If you can find someone like that, they might be more willing to sell to you.

Re: Wait for adoption or make another choice?
Having just lost a mousie that I loved, yes, I would like mice that live longer, healthier lives. However, I'm not sure I'd feel like I'm helping a mouse at all, as professional breeders usually take decent care of the mice. This breeder keeps their mice in small cages though with just food, water, bedding, and nesting material. Not sure I think that's a very nice place for them to live, but it's certainly better than what the pet store provides. I dunno, I guess it can't hurt to ask the breeder some questions. I might try asking...

They probably won't allow you to get feeder mice, even if you say you have a snake or something to feed them to. (I know it's sad, they don't deserve to be food
) You might be able to at another pet store, but I would stay away from feeder mice all-together. Even if they are fine in quarantine they might develop a problem and get your other mice sick...
I am not sure.

Re: Wait for adoption or make another choice?
I sent them a message, hopefully they answer soon. I believe whatever works out for me was meant to be. If it works out that this person is a good, reputable breeder and they are willing to sell me a pair, then maybe it was meant to be. If I end up going to the pet store and adopting some mice that need homes, then maybe that was meant to be. I'll see how it all works out and definitely will post some pictures whenever I get the new little ones!
I also have a question for anyone who knows... this breeder is a show breeder from what I understand, and their mice are very large, as show mice should be. Would they get along with my tiny pet shop mice? Lol. From the pictures I've seen online comparing fancy mice to show mice, the show mice look like giants!

Re: Wait for adoption or make another choice?
Lol, sometimes they make mice look so weird!

Yeah, show mice might hurt you little ones, if they become aggressive. Would you like to put them in show, if you did get some? That sounds interesting!

Re: Wait for adoption or make another choice?
No, haha! The only ethical breeder near me is a show breeder, hence why their mice are large. There are no shows near me, and I wouldn't really think of showing my mice if there was, as shows are really for breeders, not pet keepers like me. I just wanted to ask the breeder about their mice, and possibly get a pair of girls from them, but after looking at the size of them, I'm not so sure I want to. It's good to get mice from an ethical breeder, because they often have longer lifespans, and healthier lives. I think I might just stick with mice from the local pet store though, and maybe consider getting show mice farther in the future, but I don't think now is the right time.Mice Are Cute wrote:Yeah, show mice might hurt you little ones, if they become aggressive. I probably wouldn't get show mice either! I think your best bet would be at the pet store. I got Biggy and Grayson from a pet store, and they are perfectly healthy and happy!
Let us know what you decide.

Re: Wait for adoption or make another choice?
I have 9 mice and 7 of them have been from this particular pet store, they've all been happy and healthy when I got them. Daisy, my mouse that recently passed away, was from that pet store. She sadly passed away at only 1 year old, so while their mice are healthy, I'm not sure they are very long-lived. I still love that pet store though, they have so many different mice for you to choose from, all different colors and personalities, and their mice are usually all very healthy and happy looking compared to chain pet storesMice Are Cute wrote:Makes senseI probably wouldn't get show mice either! Bet you didn't expect this
I'm going to the breeder's place tomorrow. They told me their mice aren't that big, not too much bigger than a pet shop mouse. So, I'm going to see them tomorrow and hopefully come home with a pair! So excited! Looking at the pictures of their mice, they are beautiful.

Re: Wait for adoption or make another choice?
Oh, good for you! I hope you will come home with some. Your right, that took me be surprise!
What breeder will you go to?

Re: Wait for adoption or make another choice?
Thank you! It is the only breeder close to me, I don't really feel comfortable saying where it is, but they are a good breeder that is serious about genes and such. They track their lines very well. I will hopefully be getting a Siamese mouse and a blue mouse.Mice Are Cute wrote:Oh, good for you! I hope you will come home with some. I understand about the breeder. I really love blue mice! It is one of my favorite colors on mice. Siamese are cute, too
