Rosewood naturals salad

Post by AnonymousMouseOwner on Mon Jul 31, 2017 1:39 pm

I bought this product today at Walmart, just because it was there... I'm pretty sure it is safe for hamsters, but what about mice? Here are the ingredients:

Oat Flakes, Wheat Flakes, Marigold, Parsley, Red Beet, Alfalfa, Dandelion, Pea Flakes, Carrots, Nettle, Plantain, Wheat, Burst Wheat, Burst Maize, Edible Leaves, Cornflowers, Rose Petals, Peppermint, Maize Flakes, Melissa, Red Clover

Peppermint is questionable. I see many claim it's a mouse deterrent, but then I see people claiming that mint (leaves) is perfectly fine. I'm not sure which is true. I'll try to look again for more info on it.

Edit:  I also wonder what are the "edible leaves"?  Wonder why they didn't just list them by name like everything else?

Peppermint is far enough down the list that I would think it wouldn't matter too much, no? I smelt the mixture to see what it smelt like and I was mostly getting a hay/grass scent, didn't smell peppermint at all.

I've seen people in Germany use it for natural cage themes without issues, so I don't know.

Yeah the edible leaves thing is a little odd, but I did get the ingredients list online, maybe I should check my bag and see if it is listed the same.

Yeah. I personally don't think it is an issue. But I'm not 100% on that. I just know it's something many on TFM said to avoid and I couldn't find anything for sure on the matter.

I think it's the same on the packaging. I've been eyeing it too.    I tried to get on their site to ask but the contact page isn't loading properly for me.

Glad it worked for you, please let me know what they say.

Edit:
@AnonymousMouseOwner
I really think the idea behind mint being a deterrent comes from the use of peppermint oil in that way (with questionable results), but there's a big difference between peppermint leaves and peppermint oil. I'm still having trouble find much beyond sites talking about how to get rid of mice. Rolling Eyes

So, here's the email they sent me:
"Hello,

Thank you for your message.

The leaves are young birch leaves

Thank you"

Interesting, not what I was expecting. Are they safe? I know nothing about them.

From what I'm reading, some types of birch are perfectly safe in moderation, others not so much. I imagine they'd stick to a known safe type...

Yeah, I tried researching a bit, all I found was info on birch WOOD for gerbils, and birch leaves + wood for rabbits. For gerbils they said some types are safe, and for rabbits they said that it's ok as long as the leaves are young and fresh. So I guess the product should be ok then.

I think it would be fine. Nothing in it is actually harmful, but it's possible they just wont like the peppermint.

I gave some to the new girls, they loved it. The first thing they did was pick out the dandelions. There isn't much left of it in their tank now! My hammy liked it too Smile

I finally picked this up and my mice LOVE it. I've given them a pinch here and there and they come running and it's gone by morning. Cookie

I saw these while I was shopping for cleaning stuff... I can never help but wander over to the pet stuff! Thought my guinea pig might like to try the dandelion sticks but he's not supposed to have seeds. I'll have to take a closer look at the salad! Bouncy

I haven't seen them in stores but Rosewood sells a few different salad mixes. Check out Summerfield or Dandelion Delight .  I'm pretty sure they have even more than this but I don't know how easy they are to find in the U.S. I wish forage mixes were more popular here. girl_sigh
