How do I convince my parents for a mouse?
Hi! I want a mouse very badly, but my parents think that mice are kind of scary. They are fine with my gerbils, and they really love my 2 robo hamsters, but mice and rats are not okay. I love mice and I want to convince them that they're wonderful pets. I think that it might be that their tail is hairless, or that wild mice are sometimes seen in houses. Can you think of anything?

Re: How do I convince my parents for a mouse?
In my opinion (and probably everyone on the forum) mice are really cute, but I do know that my mum isn't very keen on them. Luckily I don't live at home anymore so she can't complain, but her main dislike of them is because "the tail looks like a worm."
She thought the rest of our little mouse was very cute though (particularly his ears). Her other main worry was that he'd escape and we'd lose him, but with a suitable home he finds it difficult to escape!
I think mice have a bit of bad reputation really which puts people off them. Wild mice were (and most likely still are) a pest in houses and on farms and were thought to spread disease.
I'm not sure how you can convince your parents, would taking them to a rescue centre/breeder/pet shop to meet a mouse or two be an option? My mum was much happier with pet mice after she actually met our mouse in person and discovered he was actually quite cute and fluffy (she is a lover of cute and fluffy).

Google mice playing basketball. Show them the video on youtube. Look for other cute videos of mice doing tricks.

I agree with Stephlisa. A lot of people have a negative mental image of mice, but once they actually see them, change their mind.
If I was trying to convince my parents to let me have mice, I think I would do a presentation for them about mice haha. I'd not only include the cutest pictures of mice that I could find, but I would include interesting and adorable facts about them, how and why they make great pets, and I would include details about their care (partly to show that I am responsible and have done my research, but also to show how easy mice are to care for). End by saying how much you would like to keep a mouse, and that you have done lots of research and are willing to be solely responsible for his care.
If that doesn't convince them, I don't know what will

My mom was terrified of mice for fifty years. But the first time she ever saw my first three girls, her mind was instantly changed. Nothing is impossible.

Well. I've obviously been through this... Lol. Anyway... I find that making a PowerPoint presentation is pretty helpful, as is writing out a long care sheet, showing interest at pet stores, taking the little care pamphlets at the stores (and crossing out incorrect stuff and fixing it... It shows your knowledge! Like, I know more than these "experts"!), and generally sharing facts whenever you can. This has worked for me with a dog before (but no I don't still have it because... Well long story but anyway I haven't had much success in the past with other animals so that's why this didn't work for me with mice, but I think with other parents and other kids it could definitely help
Basically, if you ask me... If you've done all this and they still say no? Then they'll never give in).
And make sure to stress that mice need vet visits. I know, it's natural reaction to not talk about this because it might make your parents less likely to agree. But DO IT. Or you'll sorely regret it later on... And it's just not fair to the mouse.

I find that the most helpful thing for me was showing my mom the mice at the petstore when we were there to pick up other supplies. Obviously I wasn't going to buy from the petstore, but just seeing them being cute and fun (and not gross and pests) totally changed her mind about whether mice would make decent pets! And just like Artistwolf mentioned, powerpoints can be super helpful- even if your mom still says no afterward, she's more likely to remember positive facts about them that would make her say yes in the future if you present them in a memorable way
