Are pet shops a no go?
I'm looking to get my first lot of mice soon.
I've been doing research for a few weeks now, I have my housing sorted, bedding all stocked up, food and toys all ready to be put in but I am struggling to find breeders in the UK near me.
I've joined a few U.K. Groups on Facebook but everyone seems to be at the other side of the country. My question is are pet shops a huge no no? I'm getting impatient seeming an empty tank

I like this quote that Peachy said on another topic like this:
Mice don't get to choose where they end up, they all need homes.
Peachy wrote:This topic came up (again) not long ago. Most of us agree that when there are no other options and it's either go to a pet store or don't keep mice, it's okay to go to the pet store.
I agree that they all deserve homes no matter where they came from. It's not their fault how they came into the world. The girls I brought home yesterday are two of the sweetest, and the self black girl practically demanded that if I was going to get one, I had to get her two (too).

Re: Are pet shops a no go?
Most of my mice have been from pet stores (mainly petco). I've struggled with finding other options around me, and most of the mice sold here are sold as live feeders so I figure coming home with me is better than the alternative. However I think I've stumbled upon a breeder a few hours away from me that I plan to look into (yay!). Obviously adopting would be best or buying from a reputable breeder. But no one here is going to fault you for going to a pet store if there's no better source nearby.

I always buy my rodents from PetSmart. I can never find breeders, and the Animal Rescues near me never have any. All of the rodents I have bought there have been healthy, though Iv'e bought more hamsters.

Re: Are pet shops a no go?
If you're in the UK, I believe there are stricter regulations for the sale of mice so in general they are a bit better cared for than their american cousins. My boy Colin came from a pet shop (Jollyes to be exact) and he was healthy, happy and very tameable. The store I got him from clearly care for their mice well (although obviously didn't have much handling time) and although its not as ideal as from a breeder, those mice still need homes and loving owners!
