EMERGENCY!!!!!

Post by GGMouseCare on Thu Aug 17, 2017 6:52 pm

I have a mouse who is about 7 1/2 months old. Her name is Asteria. Just now, I noticed had that she isn't moving. I went into the cage to put in their new wheel, and give them each their first ever yogurt drop. Exciting!!! However, I noticed she was not moving, or attempting to eat. She won't drink water either. The fur around her nose seems like it's gone, and around her eyes also seems like it's gone. I coaxed her out of the hide-house with a yummy yogurt drop, and she ate a little. Now she is just laying in the open, not moving, with shallow-labored breathing. I don't know what to do!!!!!!!!

A bit of background information: Her sister Ariadne has a tumor on the back of her neck. However, despite her tumor, she is still quite active. I don't know if Asteria got sick because of genetics, but both of the younger sisters in my cage are currently sick. (I have 4 mice, all half sisters. Same Dad, different Mom.) I noticed that this mouse (her name is Asteria) has a small lump underneath her chin.

I was afraid to pick her up. According to what you just read, can anyone help me?
I'm desperate, and I believe that a Asteria is in critical condition. HELP!!! If you have any questions or concerns, PLEASE don't hesitate to contact me.

UPDATE:
As of just now, the mouse I was concerned for, walked back into her little house. I'm quite confused.

how is she now?  it's hard to speculate what could have been wrong but a couple things come to mind, like heart attack or stroke.  Both of which could explain her condition and recovery.  Except the hair loss, that is something else.

this small lump you mentioned, is it high up near her mouth or is it lower on her neck?

The lump you questioned seems like it is higher up. Also, today/tonight she was moving around the cage, but slowly. Do you know what losing hair on her face means? I haven't got a clue. Thanks for getting back to me. Wink

Mice are prone to all kinds of lumps and bumps but many of them are benign. If the lump was lower on the neck, I would be concerned as that is a common place for cancerous tumors... but the chin area, may not be as alarming. I would keep an eye on it to see if it goes away or gets bigger. If it gets bigger, I would see a vet as it may be something like an abscess.

Hair loss can be caused by a diet too high in protein, allergies, over grooming, or mites. What are you feeding her? Have you ever treated her for mites with Ivermectin? Do you see her over grooming her face?

Almost all pet store mice have mites, don't worry though, people can't get them from mice.... they are species specific.

Update: My mouse is no longer moving, or eating. She grooms herself every now and then, but nothing else. Her stomach area looks slightly swollen, but that could be just me. I am taking her to the vet tomorrow. I'm really worried about her. When I pick her up, she just sits in my hand. She doesn't bother to climb all over me like she would.

As to answer scaredy mouse, I have never given her Ivermectin. As for over-grooming her face, no. And I did not get my mice from a pet store.

How is she? The vet might have something for her, luckily.

She is doing a bit better, thanks for asking. I picked her up about 20 minutes ago and gently force-fed her some water. She needs to stay hydrated. Then I placed her in her hammock, and she is enjoying it in there. Wink I put a small pinch of her food in the mouse hammock with her, so she could get food if she wanted it. There is an easy way for her to get down and out of the hammock, as well. Hopefully the vet can help.

Yes, more than earlier. I will check up on her later tonight, to make sure something horrible didn't happen. I refilled he water bottles so they have lots of water. I also put some carrots in their cage because all my little mice love carrots. Millet is also a hit.

Is she separated from the rest of mice? Are the other mice sick?

Re: EMERGENCY!!!!!

No, none of my other 3 females appear to be sick. However one does have a tumor, she's moving around fine and eating.

I just got back from the vet. She took a look at my mouse and reccomended I feed her a combination of peanut butter and eggs, or peanut butter and oatmeal. Apparently my mouse (named Asteria) ate/chewed on something, and she swallowed it. It agitated her stomach tremendously. She has a large soft, squishy lump for a tummy right now. No tumors, thank god. The vet said she will have a stomachache. But I need to give her the food right away because it is high in protein, and will help her gain the weight she lost. The combination of peanut butter and oatmeal will help. Thanks for all your help! I will continue updating as the day goes on.

About an hour ago, I went in the mouse cage to give her some eggs and peanut butter, but I couldn't. Asteria had already passed away. She was 8 1/2 months old, and most likely died of a blockage in her stomach. May she Rest In Peace.
