How many mice should I own? Is construction paper toxic?
Hi! I'm new to the forum and owning mice. I've been researching fancy mice for about 2 months, but because there is a lack of information it has been difficult to get all the answers I need. I came across this forum by chance and it's literally been heaven for me! I apologize if this is in the wrong place, this is my first post.
Anyway, I'm planning on owning three female mice given to me by a trusted breeder, and having them situated in a 40 gallon aquarium. I originally wanted two to test things out first and then get a third one eventually, but I fear that the females may be violent towards the new female mice if I let two get accustomed to each other and then introduce a third in the same tank after a few months. I heard this was a possibility. Would it be best to just get three all at the same time?
Additionally, I'm curious about using construction paper for nesting material. I want to decorate my tank safely and use red as an accent color, but there are no nesting materials for mice you can buy with a strong color like that, as far as I know. I plan on using Carefresh Ultra as the bedding, but I read about this one mice owner who said she would get colored crinkle paper from the crafts store and use it as long as it wasn't metallic and had no glitter. I'm kind of skeptic about this because I know that the coloring on paper could be toxic. Is this really safe? As an alternative, I thought about buying non toxic red construction paper and just cutting it myself.

Three mice is actually recommended, if you don't want four. I'm not very sure about the paper either...

Yes, three or more is best, so I would definitely go ahead and get all 3 at the same time. Maybe you can even get 3 sisters who already know each other and have bonded, since you're getting them from a breeder.
Construction paper is safe. So is the crinkle paper. There is also an "Apple Orchard" color paper-based bedding sold by Kaytee. It's a very deep, pretty Autumn-ey red and unscented and completely safe. Tissue paper or napkins are also safe options. Avoiding glitter, fragrance, or metallic as you said.

Wow, thank you so much! I'll definitely be getting three then!
