Out of curiousity...
And if you don't mind sharing....
About how much do you spend monthly on mouse toys? Food? Bedding? Other? And for how many mice?
I'm just curious about the cost difference area to area and person to person.
Thank you.

Re: Out of curiousity...
I calculated it out a while back and I think I spend about $5 per animal/month. I have 17 mice... which comes out to about $85. This is what I budget every month, and a small portion of that rolls over into the vet fund (probably about $25.00 a month). I buy all my supplies in bulk whenever possible and I get everything on sale. At this point, I have all the toys they could ever need, so all I buy every month is bedding, food, treats.
I love all my critters... but I'll be glad to have less tanks to maintain.

Wow, 17. I knew it but I guess it didn't sink in until now. I bet it's fun but I also understand why you'd be glad to have less in the future.
Thank you for breaking it down. I was mostly curious because I came across someone who spends a chunk on toys monthly - which is perfectly fine if you'd like to, no issues there, but it confuses me when it's made to sound like it's a necessity.
Off to try to break down my total monthly mousey costs...

Re: Out of curiousity...
Honestly I don't know about the toys. I just buy them a new toy or two here and there. I'd say probably $5-20 a month. Then, I recently stocked up on bedding so I haven't been paying for bedding monthly, but I usually go through about one bag of Carefresh a month, so that's another $15-20 depending if the Carefresh is on sale or not. I go through about 2 bags of Vitakraft a month, at $5 each, so $10.
So my monthly costs can be anywhere from $30-50 a month for 11 mice.

I'm struggling to remember how long what lasts me. I know my food mix works out to be around $5 a month. Bedding I think is around the same as you Anon, but I'm not 100% on that because I use it for other animals and I'm not totally sure on how long a bag lasts me. If I try to break down cost of treats and chews monthly, I think it works out to a few dollars, maybe. Though I have splurged on those rosewood balls once ($8 I think) and they were gone quickly, but that was only once and they shared the pack with the ham. Then there's things like popsicle sticks and hot glue, which can't be much when broken down to monthly costs. I really think I only buy them about twice a year. Maybe 3x. I haven't bought fleece since last Fall.
I usually only splurge on fancy toys when I have "my own" cash - which isn't too often. But I do love a good thrift store find. Unless it's really super neat, I try not to spend more than a couple dollars on each thrift store item. I do check thrift stores out up to a few times a month, but I don't buy regularly. Today was the first I've bought from a thrift shop in months and it wasnt for the mice.
I should try to track all this better. I'll try to remember to come back and edit in a few months, after I can get a more accurate number.

Yeah.... 17. In 8 tanks. Sigh. It's a lot. But it is also fun. Every single one of them is super friendly. Whenever I walk in the room, all my little gentleman climb on top of their water bottles trying to get my attention. They love their momma. And all my girls run up to their hammocks and step all over each other to be first in line. It's all very sweet.
They keep me busy but every now and then, I stop and appreciate them for how sweet they are. They are so gentle and they appreciate every little thing I do for them. I took the time last week to make some of the construction paper shapes that I used to and shred some tissue paper to toss in with the usual bedding/toilet paper nesting material.... and they went bananas! My girls were bopping into each other with all the sparking. They were so happy. I sat there for a long time watching all my boys and girls decorate their nests with their 'oh so special' construction paper and tissue paper. They are sweet little things.
I still want less tanks though! Unfortunately, each tank I get rid of with come with a broken heart.
