chubby old Winnie
my poor old brindle, Winnie, she's so fast! She's close to 80g and it's all fat. Poor thing has a hard time getting around, doesn't really run on the wheel, and has a hard time breathing. she's not sick, it's due to her weight. Well, i guess it could also be heart failure from an enlarged Heat having to work too hard. I feel bad because there isn't much i can do for her. For those of you that don't know, brindle mice are genetically prone to severe obesity and that's just how it is. the problem is that with obesity comes all the same problems you find in people.
anyway, I'm just bummed out that its stated to catch up with her. I just have to keep an eye on her to see if she starts sounding congested, that would be a sign of fluid buildup around the heart and lungs from heart failure. Think warm thoughts for my WinnieFred.

Re: chubby old Winnie
Daisy was like that when she was alive, and I kind of wonder if that contributed to her somewhat early death. She couldn't climb, never ran on the wheel, and couldn't even sit up and groom herself. Her sisters had to groom her because she couldn't do it. Clover is like that too, but not as bad. It's kind of weird because Clover is a brindle, and Daisy was not a brindle, yet Daisy was bigger than Clover! Clover is 81 grams. Daisy would have been a few grams above that, closer to 90 grams. It is sad that you can't help them
I try to keep their setup very easy to navigate so that Clover can do normal mousie things. I make ladders at an angle so that they are more like a ramp, and she can climb them better that way. Daisy got stuck in a hammock once and couldn't climb down. I had to pick her up and put her on the ground. Always be careful with what toys you use with big mice. Daisy got stuck an awful lot.

Re: chubby old Winnie
Aw, poor stuck mousie! Yeah, my tank is seniorized, still fun but with less climbing and more ramps, lol.

Aw, poor Winnie. I never weighed Frog, but he was so fat at one point that he walked strange. I can't even remember what he did, but it was alarming and I did a lot to try to stop him from getting heavier. Now he's 32 months and I'm saddened at how noticeably thinner he is. lol
My best to your girl!

Awww. hugs to you and Winnie. Rina has a little trouble getting her fat butt around too.
@AnonymousMouseOwner, is Clover RY? Sometimes a mouse that looks yellow is actually a very "poorly" marked brindle. I've wondered if Celyn and Rina were really brindle instead of agouti. I'm still not sure if a mouse has to present brindle to carry the brindle gene? If that makes sense? But I suppose any mouse of any color could struggle with obesity. It's just more common with brindles.

Clover is pure brindle. Daisy was yellow, with white spots on her, so I guess broken yellow. She never showed any brindle on her. I suppose it could have been recessiveCallaLily wrote:Awww. hugs to you and Winnie. Rina has a little trouble getting her fat butt around too.
