Hello everybody~

Post by MouseOnHauntedHill on Thu 26 May 2016, 3:13 pm

Hey all! I just registered to this forum today, as I'm currently raising two mice. I have had pet rodents throughout my childhood, overall two fancy rats from a breeder, two pet store fancy rats, two pet store fancy mice and one rabbit. I had success with these pets, but after the last of them had passed on I remained rodent-free for many years (I'm now 21), until a few weeks ago.

My mom's coworker found two orphaned baby deer mice on the sidewalk about three weeks ago, with no nest (or mother) in sight. They were tiny, barely-furred little guys with eyes shut when they were found, and since I rehabilitated an injured, orphaned baby bird last summer, the coworker suggested my mother take them to me to see if I could help. I'm a baby animal magnet; St. Francis must love me Laughing

Anyway, my boyfriend and I fed the babies Esbilac Goat's milk formula around the clock, massaged their little tummies to get them to go potty, and set up a warm habitat for them. My initial plan was to release them after they were weaned, but I think they are far too docile now to be released into the wild--jumpy and active, but very friendly and like to be held/pet. They are being weaned right now; I give them partial Esbilac forumla and partial soft foods like oatmeal, along with some regular mouse food placed as treats around their house, and water of course.

I look forward to being here and welcome any tips anyone has to offer for my little Gustav and Despereaux. I do plan on separating them into different tanks once they are weaned, as I believe they're both male and I don't want them murdering each other.

Welcome to the forum! How good of you to bring up the two little orphans

Unfortunately, I can't say it's a good idea that you keep these two deer mice. They're wild animals; eventually their instincts will take over, and they will never be truly happy in captivity the way they can be in the wild. The right thing to do is to release them when they're weaned as you planned. Don't worry, a couple weeks of human handling isn't enough to erase the millenia's worth of wild instincts that they have. So long as you release them properly, they will be just fine and very happy.

Thank you, everybody! CinnamonPearl, yes, you're probably right. I worry so much for the little guys but I suppose they may be happier if I release them sometime in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, I hope I can make them happy and healthy! Thank you for the welcomes, everybody. Love
