Mites - Will this work?

Post by Mousetropolis on Thu Oct 05, 2017 2:55 pm

Alright, so. About a week and a half ago I got a new pair of mice to add to my current tank. I had noticed that the smaller one, Bean, had some little scabs on her in the store, but I figured since she was little and in an overpopulated tank, that she was just being bullied a little. Since then, she's lost some hair on her shoulders and side, and it's become apparent that she's got mites of some sort. I've got Bean completely alone now, I've even separated her from the other mouse I bought with her, as Ivy hasn't shown any signs of mites herself. I've done some research, and the thing that I keep seeing is Ivermectin, particularly the kind used for horses. I think I found one that will work, Eqvalan Paste (1.87% Ivermectin)
What I'm wondering is, how do I go about giving this to her? How much should I dilute it? Should I give it to her orally, or as a topical treatment? Both? Should I also treat Ivy too, just in case?

Here's a link to our Ivermectin info. It has instructions and a link to the correct product. If you choose not to purchase from Amazon and look elsewhere, what you want is a cattle pour-on with 5mg of Ivermectin per mL. If you can't get this, I would go to a vet.

The Ivermectin treatment we mention in the article above eliminates mites and is also good for preventive treatments. Mice don't always show symptoms of mites right away, so it's likely Ivy has them anyway. Mites aren't selective between mice. I would treat Bean and Ivy, in additional to all the other mice you have (just to be safe).

Thanks for the quick reply, Peachy- I should have just read that page in the first place! I was actually looking at the stuff recommended there, so it's already bookmarked on Amazon for me. I'll give all my girls a treatment, and I think I'm gonna keep some of it on hand from now on as well.

I wanted to add that you should put Bean back in with Ivy. If Bean has mites, most likely Ivy already has them too. So no need to stress them out by being separated. We would love to see photos of your new girls when you get a chance Very Happy
