Ummm...

Post by TheDirewolfMice on Sun Oct 08, 2017 10:09 am

So I’m in a Facebook group for pet mice and I replied to a woman’s post asking about housing size with a link to the cage calculator. This is the response I got... https://imgur.com/a/GJlG2 . Although I’ve only had my mice for a little over a month, I’ve spent hours googling and reading and trying to give my mice the best living conditions they could have, and not once have I read that tank size is controversial. Ugh.

Opinions do vary on tank/cage size. Some even feel that they can cram mice into less space, if you can believe it.  Nah

This rescue's minimum is 12×12 inches for 1 mouse. AFRMA seems to think 5 gallons is the minimum for "Single male, male with female during breeding, female with litter (first 3 weeks)."

TFM, this forum, and a few others agree that for 3 females OR 1 male a 10 gallon tank is minimum.  The maximum number of mice for a 20 gallon long is 5 females (for a 20 high, 4).
(I personally agree with the minimums here but I do like to try to give my mice more space when I can.)

I've seen several people (not necessarily groups, but individual people here and there) that feel 10g is the minimum for 1 male and that 20 gallons is the minimum for a group of 3.  I've also seen some other people who push for larger.

German based groups have a much much larger minimum. http://www.cagecalc.de/start.py?conf=mice&lang=eng

The calculator originated from breeder standards rather than pet standards, if that sheds light on the minimum idea. If you look around the breeding forum, their housing ideas are pretty similar (and I know some say that it's even too generous). I imagine that's also what AFRMA standards are based on. Before the TFM calculator was adjusted to be more "pet friendly," it used to say a 5 gallon was okay too.

I tried to emphasise that some mice will do better with more space (just like some would freak out with more space) than the minimum that the calculator provides, but I think maybe a lot of people ignore that part. Mice are all different and it's up to owners to decide what's best for them.

I noticed that too. I sometimes see people in other groups claiming you shouldn't ever go much above the minimum and then linking to the calculator here. Don't Know
