Mouse Quirks!
I wanted to start a thread for "Mouse Quirks". If your mouse (past or present) has a funny quirk, a silly thing that they do, or a behaviour that makes you laugh, then this would be the place to share it
I'll start.
1. My mouse Honey, ever since she was a baby has always squinted/shut one of her eyes when she sniffs things. So when she comes over to sniff my hand it looks like she's winking at me.
2. My dearly departed mouse, Peach (my avatar picture) loved cleaning. I used to refer to her as a house wife. She spent 50% of her time either working on the nest, or tidying. She used to clean out their cage by throwing poops, soiled litter etc through the bars of their cage.
3. Another previous mouse of mine, Daisy was so eager to come out of her cage for play time, that if she saw me walk by the cage, she would climb to the door of the cage, cling on with all four paws and shake the door to get my attention, like "Let me out!"
Your turn!

Peach sounds like a joy! And it nice for them that she kept the place clean, but more work for you, having to sweep up the bedding.
I think it's super cute you had a winking mouse! Your mice sound like they have big personalities.
One of my mice, (Also named Daisy) really REALLY likes to be groomed. She follows Oreo around constantly asking to be groomed by sticking her head underneath Oreo's mouth to be groomed. Oreo, being the sweet caring mouse she is, she usually obliges, but it sometimes gets in her way when she is trying to be a productive mouse (clean, eat, exercise).
I've never seen a mouse love being groomed as much as Daisy does.

Re: Mouse Quirks!

For some reason Yoshi likes to sit in my hands. On the recliner, if I'm on my phone or reading or something, he'll do all he can to reach my hand and make me put it flat... and just sit in it. He doesn't groom or anything, he just sits there. He also likes feet.
Lucas never used a box to sleep in... he would take shredded paper and craft some weirdo nest ball sort of thing.
I'll have to think of some more. Interesting thread idea!

Jinx! One of my bucks has never used a house, always preferring to build his own elaborate nest thing. Even in the middle of winter, even choosing his nest over sharing the house with a doe.
Super cool thread, I know heaps of mine have cute little quirks. But of course I can't think of them right now.
Re: Mouse Quirks!
Soren - that's so cute about your Daisy. I could watch mice groom each other all day, it's so adorable.
Abeona - your Yoshi liking feet reminds me... When I used to let my old mouse Ginger run around on the bed, she used to attack your feet if you were wearing socks
She would bite your feet and start tugging at the socks, trying to pull them off
Mice have the best personalities. No two are the same, it's my favourite thing about them

Re: Mouse Quirks!
oh man, you want talk quirky... I have a millions hamsters stories. But my mice do some silly stuff, too. i'll never forget the first time I noticed that they each had their own favorite treats. I know it's not a big deal, but that's the day that I realized how unique each of them are and what distinct personalities they had.
My boy, Goose, is an excellent nest builder. It's exactly the same every week for the last year. And he keeps a really neat tank. Anyway, for his nest box, it's just one of those little blue plastic Petco next boxes. After cleanings, I used to throw bedding in, put the nest box down and stuff a few pieces of shredded toilet paper in there. He used to mess around in there for such a long time trying to get everything just right. Once day, I finally looked in there on cleaning day to see what all the fuss what about. He took out every trace of bedding. And fashioned his toilet paper in a fluffy circle, which he sleeps in the middle of.
Whaaaaat? How cute is that!?! So next time, after cleaning, I tried to set everything up just the way he liked it, as a token of my affection. Except this time I added some more toilet paper on the outside of the next in case he wanted more. He seemed quite pleased with my work and I've done it like that ever since.
The other adorable thing about Goose... is that sometimes, I use a craft punch to make little construction paper hearts to toss in the tank just because it's cute. He's a boy, so he gets blue hearts. Anyway, he likes to carry the hearts in him mouth back to his nest to sleep on. I about died of cute overload, when I lifted his nest box for cleaning day and found his normal little circle of toilet paper with a bunch of little blue hearts in the center. Squeeee!
He's also super friendly. If I walk by his tank or call his name, he will drop what he's doing (I've seen him drop a cheerio mid bite) and run to the top of the tank and start rattling the lid to come out. He also loves to give whisker tickles in the ears. I know he's done a million more silly things... but that's all I've got for right now.

Re: Mouse Quirks!
That's funny, MouseLover! Yoshi bites toes if you have socks on, but he doesn't try to tug them off.
I love looking in the mouse nests, but my girls don't do much besides drag paper in the box... Most of my boys have always tangled it up so well that if I dumped it, it'd hold its shape. The heart thing is cute.
This is cool! One of Lucas' sons made the nest ball a couple times when he didn't like the box I gave him, but I've never seen anyone else do it. They just buried themselves in paper.

Re: Mouse Quirks!
Scaredymouse - I saw your paper hearts in your hamster pics, and stole the idea. I got some string and hung up a paper cup full of them, and the mice would hop in the cup, grab a heart and carry it back to their nest. It was adorable.
Just remembered - some of my previous girls had a seesaw toy, but decided that they didn't like the "tipping action" (if you know what I mean). They dug their litter up to make a little ramp/hill under one side of the seesaw so that it stayed still and wouldn't tip... It wasn't an accident. They did the exact same thing every time I put it in there. That's when I realised how smart mice are

Re: Mouse Quirks!
MouseLover, like your Peach, my late Lucia was the ultimate housefrau mouse! She would clean up after her sisters had "disarranged" things but I was her mortal enemy when it came to cleaning.
After each weekly deep clean of the tank, I would evenly build up the floor starting with several sheets of newspaper, then shredded newspaper tossed with Kaytee CleanandCozy bedding -- this never suited Lucia and she would immediately go to work piling up bedding in some areas, lowering it in others; her sisters didn't care either way. Some items were always returned to the tank (i.e., wheel, water bottle, food bowl) while other items such as various climbing toys, different hides, etc., were rotated in and out. When the mice were returned to the clean tank, the other three would happily run around to investigate the revamped "digs"; however, Lucia would just sit in the middle, sniffing and peering around, then turn around and glare at me because I dared to mess with the feng shui of the tank! She would then start to physically move the items she could manage to get them back where they "belonged." She could take up the whole week before all was to her liking and then I'd come along to do a deep clean and ruin the entire project. Even when I placed all of the items back in the tank exactly where she had moved them, it still wasn't good enough for Lucia: she'd always find something "wrong" that she'd have to fix! Her three sisters and I loved her and so were willing to indulge her need to constantly clean and redecorate.

Re: Mouse Quirks!
I love how mice move their furniture
why do they do that?! And digging up the bedding so that it's piled up in places and practically bare in others. Why?!

Re: Mouse Quirks!
It's no surprise that mice are so quick to turn OCD with scratching and self harm. It's very interesting that rodents border on our definition of mental illness! Mice obsessively clean and organize... Hamsters hoard... Very interesting.

Re: Mouse Quirks!
My buck, Alex, would sing to me! The sound was above my range of hearing. When I was near his cage, he would climb onto the bars with all four feet. He would take a huge breath in. Then his chest would vibrate very intently. I would sing back to him, calling, "Alex, Alex the bear." He looked like a brown bear.
My buck, Homer, was the mouse who would NEVER be tamed. He was born here, so he should have been tame from a few days of age. The best way I found of coping with him was to drag around a rope for him to pounce on as if he was a cat. He would attack it, then climb the bit that led to my hand so that I would give him a pet on the head before returning him to the playground to chase it again.

Re: Mouse Quirks!
No matter how I make his nest Colin will always empty all the bedding out and start again. Its very cute to watch!
He will also only ever chew on egg boxes and very rarely anything else that isn't food (normally just if it's in the way!). He won't even shred a tissue to get treats that are on the inside - he'll very carefully roll it around his home to open it up!!!
Mice are so clever. Sometimes I wonder if they do actually run our planet like in Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy!

This is a great thread. Of course, I can't think of anything unusual my mice did/do.
Don't get me wrong, they're all adorably awesome! They just pretty much do regular mouse things.
........
There was Twix, who would beg to climb up onto me - only to immediately beg to get back down - only to immediately beg to get back up. Again and again.

Re: Mouse Quirks!
The "Bad One" had to use a water dish for about a week and kept it clean. That was a quirk IMO. I have never seen a young mouse have a water dish and not mess it up. No paper in it, no food in it, no poo or pee in it, pristine condition for the entire week.
My mouse before these used to chase his tail. Maybe he wasn't very flexible or something but he used to chase his tail all the time over and over and get really angry that he couldn't grab it. He would try for it like 3 or 4 times in a row and then just go back to grooming his belly. Then after a few minutes, he'd go for the tail again and fail. I had never seen that before.
