Re: The new bin topper!
That's awesome!! I once made something very similar for my mice (ended up giving it to my gerbils), but it only topped half of the cage and the other half had a door so I could reach the floor. Do you plan to add shelves, or just do hammocks?

Re: The new bin topper!
Thanks and I have an old topper that I bought from a pet store that I used for past gerbils but it was quite small but boy did my gerbils like it. I may add some shelves but I would mainly like ropes and hammocks.abeona wrote:That's awesome!! Wow that's awesome! I bet some mice would be very happy in there
Particularly impressed that you managed to make a door
What are the little white and green bits? Like zip ties?

Thanks and yes all I used was zip ties to create the frame which is what the white things are. I didn't know if I would be able to make a door but it worked out wellMouseLover wrote:Wow that's awesome! Re: The new bin topper!
I made a rat cage very similar to this. Unfortunately my parents never let me get the rats, my mom decided it was a "dust collector" in my room, and sit got relegated to the shed. I was really unhappy about that because I was proud of it! But anyway. This looks very good! How did you get the edges to not be sharp? I folded all my edges over a little (to the outside).

Re: The new bin topper!
The edges are sharpish but they point outwards or are too tightly fastened to other pieces of mesh to prevent a mouse hurting itself on them. At the door I will be putting either some duct tape or beads of hot glue to cover the sharp areasArtistwolf wrote:I made a rat cage very similar to this. Ah, okay
I'd recommend not using duct tape—it's very dangerous if a mouse chews on it and ingests a little.

Nice! It turned out very well!
I don't have any skill like that, I could barely pull together my hamster's bin cage!

Re: The new bin topper!
Also, mice can chew through zip ties. It would take them a long time to get through all the ones you've got on there, but you will need to watch that closely.

Re: The new bin topper!
yeah I thought they might chew through them so I may replace them with bits of wire instead although I'm hoping with a lot of toys they won't chew themscaredymouse wrote:Also, mice can chew through zip ties. It looks awesome! How big is it? Seems like you could fit quite a few ladies in there.

Re: The new bin topper!
My mice never had any interest in bothering zip ties... It might be worth it to see how they do with them before you change it. I tried wire with a second mini-topper and it was so much trouble.
