Can you Wake a Mouse Up?
Sooo, I have a boy mouse and I want to spend 1-2 hours a day with him if I can, but he doesn't seem to wake up until I'm asleep. I don't want to interrupt his sleep, but how am is supposed to give him the attention he needs? I am a new mouse owner just trying to figure things out. Thanks for the help.

I wake up my mouse, Mickey, if he is sleeping when I am ready to clean his tank. He will be sleeping in his little igloo and I just call his name a few times and he pokes his head out and then comes right out. He is always in a good mood when he wakes up and ready for some interaction. So, I don't see any problem with waking your mouse up for some fun

That's perfectly all right if you wake him up! But I personally also don't prefer to, so normally when I see them awake is when I get them out or stuff like that; the biggest exception I make is, like Rodents rock! mentioned, waking my girls up by taking them out of their hidey hut/lifting it off them when I want to clean their cage. I don't know your boy is on the younger side or not, but I'd think that if he's at least somewhat healthy, you should see him out sometimes even in the day... Unless you work outside of home or happen to never be in the room when he's awake. Mice ARE night time critters, but they have their moments of being awake and active in the day. My girls tend to really get active when they're wanting food, too. Also, sometimes they take naps during the night, I'm pretty sure. So, it goes both ways.
P.S. Playing with them for an hour or two isn't a must; it's nice for them to explore, though, and to spend time like that to bond, but if there are days where you can't get him out, or even if it's for just a few minutes, that's perfectly fine... just sayin'.

Re: Can you Wake a Mouse Up?
It's okay to wake him. I start feeding and changing water, spot cleaning, etc and that usually wakes them up. You can also try to get them on a schedule by visiting with them at the same time everyday. It's kind of like people getting used to waking up at the same time every day without an alarm clock... but less annoying, hopefully!
All my boys learned that 5:30pm is play time, and most of them would wake up and wait for me to come get them out. My girls also know when I wake up and start climbing the bars waiting for morning treats before they go to bed.

Re: Can you Wake a Mouse Up?
Thanks for your all the help, but he doesn't know his name yet and won't come out when he hears my voice. Even when I move around the bedding he still refuses to come out. I don't want to force him out or scare him. I am not usually home during the day and don't see him when he gets up during the day. I would like to bond with him, but I am sure how I will find the time when we are both awake. Any ideas?

Re: Can you Wake a Mouse Up?
I notice that my boy usually wakes up the time that I feed him. It took him a few weeks to get a hang of the schedule, but once he got used to me feeding him at a certain time (I usually feed him around 7-8 pm) he would wake up just by hearing me walk by his cage. I'm not saying this is a for sure way to wake your mouse up, because every mouse is different, but generally mice will be happier to wake up if it is feeding time, and you can get in some bonding time before you feed them. Like the others said, its helpful to have a pretty steady schedule that your mouse can get used to, and then the mouse may start to transition their sleeping habits to line up with that schedule (to some extent).
How long have you had your mouse? If the mouse is newer it will likely just take some time until they get used to your voice, and once they do, they will be more likely to come out when you call them. Again, like the others said, if you really need to, you can lift the house your mouse is sleeping on away from them to wake them up, but I usually wouldn't do that because it can stress and annoy your mouse.

Re: Can you Wake a Mouse Up?
I would just wake him up when you can then. No need for names -- none of mine know their names, but as they're girls, they need/want handling less.
A schedule is best, but if you can't stick to one, that's fine. My girl doesn't seem bothered.
I wake my mice up when I want to get them out for some playtime. If he won't wake up with some rustling of bedding, then picking the hide he's asleep in up will usually do the trick.
