Pinecones Empty Pinecones

Post by CucumberMouse Wed 13 Dec 2017, 11:12 pm

I saw some pinecones being sold as pet chews at the petsmart, and it got me wondering, are pinecones safe for mice to chew (assuming that the sharp part of them was taken off). Also, are pinecones a type of wood?

It might be that the phenols were just too high, but I gave all my mice pinecones recently and not one touched them. If it were me, I'd spend my money on something else for them to chew.

I use them for rabbits, and they have sensitive stomachs -- most rabbit toys are safe for mice. I would bet on their safety.

I've read conflicting info on pinecones. I bought a wooden small animal wreath toy once that had one attached but I cut if off just to be safe. Probably overreacting but without knowing for sure I didn't want to risk it. Confused

They are safe, my mice had one from the petstore, it came with other chews. You can pick some off the ground and use them. To clean 1.)Soak in 2/3 vinegar+ 1/3 water for 15-30 minutes. 2.)Then rinse and soak in water for 10 minutes. 3.)Bake at 300 degrees F til dry.
