Thin fur and Age in young mouse

Post by jubilee on Wed 03 Jan 2018, 2:22 pm

So Jam (Officially her name) appears to be quite young.  I noticed today while she was begging to be let out, that her fur is quite thin in some places.  Is this normal, and how old do ya'll mouse professionals think she is?

The fur under her chin and on her chest looks matted, rather than sparse. She may not be cleaning that area properly. You mentioned in another thread that she needed her back washed, so maybe she misses the front as well. Watch her through several grooming sessions, and see if she's not getting to certain spots.

If I'm not mistaken, young mice don't always clean themselves well. She looks very young. I would actually guess three weeks, maybe 3.5...but no older, I'd say. Most mice aren't usually ready to be sold by then, but some pet shops sell the mice they bred themselves early. Happens quite often here, unfortunately. If she's eating on her own, it shouldn't hurt her.

I'd also treat for mites, just in case.

I agree, she looks more unkempt to me. Either because she's so young or maybe she isn't feeling well. Any signs of illness? Labored breathing, clicking, hunched posture, etc.

What are you feeding her and what is the protein? Treating new mice for mites is always a good idea too.
