should i get one male mouse or three females??
hey!! i was thinking about getting a mouse sometime this year or next year, but the thing is,,,,, i have absolutely no idea what gender i should get. i was planning to just get whatever gender my local petstore had, but it turned out they actually have both. so now i have no idea on what to get. i think it would be easier in a way to just get a single male and to bond with him, but at the same time i think it would be a nice experience to take care of three girls and watch them interact. i'd really like to hear some opinions on what i should get.

Re: should i get one male mouse or three females??
I personally have always had girls, other than my current male who I've only had for three days- so I don't have a lot of experience with the boys. I've always loved females, and having little groups.
A lot of people here will tell you that males are the way to go, especially if you want him to bond only with you. It's really a personal preference!
Things to consider: How much attention do you want/have time to give to your mouse/mice? Are you (or your family members) concerned with the smell of the mice? Are you able to, if necessary, provide vet care for multiple new animals? Are you able to separate females if they need to be separated? etc etc

I think females are easier, personally. If you want a pet to bond with and handle daily, a male might be the way to go. Personally, though, I find I dont always have the energy to take the girls out, so them having company makes it easier for me. Its all about your lifestyle, really!

Re: should i get one male mouse or three females??
I honestly prefer females, I only keep girls currently and have only had two boys as opposed to my twelve girls. There is a general trend that boys are more sociable and make better pets, but I find that this comes down strictly to the individual personality. I've had many girls who were far more sociable and kind to me than either of my boys. So it's just up to your preference! Would you rather have a one-on-one relationship with a mouse? Or would you prefer to be the friend of a colony of girls?

Re: should i get one male mouse or three females??
I'm partial to males, but I've never had females before so
. They're both great though, girls don't need as much attention from the owner, and you get to experience the personalities of multiple mice, where as males usually need or like more attention from the owner. There are exceptions to those though, each mouse has his/her own personality. I do think that with girls there is a higher risk of getting more health issues-because more mice- and thus higher vet bills for the most part. You also have the possibility of the group of girls not getting along with one another, even if it is rare, it can add complications that might not be overly appreciated by a first time owner. However, the smell on male mice is quite a bit worse than female mice, which can be an issue with any other people that live in the house with you. Its really up to the owner again, mice are great animals, male or female

It depends on your preferences and circumstances.
If you have a male you need be able to give a chunk of time each day to at socialise with him (although as others have, the boy in question may not want it!). They can smell more too, but I only notice the smell when their cage needs cleaning at the end of the week!
Females *need* less time with you as they have each other although many girls will probably want more!

I have an idea!
Because the three-girls-or-one-boy option has both pros and cons either way you go, and since you are not planning to run right out and get your mousie(s) immediately, then instead of troubling your decision-making processes too much and maybe second-guessing yourself later, why not take some little pieces of paper (all the same size), write "girls" on 5 or 10 of them, write "boy" on an equal number of them, and crumple them all up and put them in a paper bag (or something similar).
Every so often, maybe a couple of times a day, shake up the bag, pull one of the crumples out and open it, keep track on a chart whether it's "girls" or "boy", and then re-crumple the paper and return it to the bag, so the number of papers for each choice will remain equal for each drawing. You can even have other people draw crumples for you. Set yourself a time limit, like a week or two, or a month or two. Resolve that at the end of the time limit, whichever option has been drawn the most, then that is what you will get, and begin preparing yourself and your mousehouse for your selection.
If you end up with a tie, maybe you will have to just buy three girls AND a boy.
