Treating mites + introduction

Post by River on Sat 13 Jan 2018, 3:36 pm

I'm going to be retreating both of the mice with ivermectin, however I have a few questions about both the wood allergy and how to introduce mice who are both being treated.

First of all -- nearly all my toys are cardboard. If I were to dispose of the cardboard toys, she would have well...near none. She's used all her cardboard toys in the past week and a half as I rearrange the cage often to prevent boredom and OCD. Can I just spray them with the ivermectin instead? I treated before, but back then, she was fine with wood and had enough toys.

Secondly I think I'll be introducing the girls on Monday. Should I start treatment then, or sooner? Or should they be treated separately? I forgot to treat Garcia when I first got her, and then it kept getting put off, so she has never been treated.

(To clarify on why I'm introducing them so soon after all the eye drama: I got Garcia nearly four weeks ago, and Graham has been alone for far too long. It isn't fair to either of them. Although Garcia's vet visit + diagnosis is questionable, I do not believe she has anything contagious to other mice. I will admit that it's a risk, but one I'm willing to take...if she gets Graham sick, they will see a vet. Hope this is fine by all of you!)

As an extra precaution, it wouldn't be bad to get a head start, but if they're both being treated it shouldn't matter when you start.
New toys would be best, but spraying with Ivermectin and letting them dry thoroughly would be fine... so would not treating them, actually. If the mice are treated, any parasites in their environment that find their way to the mice will be killed also. Treating the environmemt is just another extra precaution.

Thanks! After a week home and another at the vet with just mildly watery eyes, I'm excited to say the introduction will start in a few minutes! I plan to do a deep clean of the tank + then let them meet in the bathtub.

I'm excited. And kind of nervous.

Let's hope it goes well! I'll make this its own thread once it actually starts.
