Are my female mice actually female?

Post by RDPro on Thu Feb 01, 2018 1:42 pm

My mice get along fine, and I've had them in the same cage for 2 months and they've been fine. However, I've researched alot about sex checking and, yes, they both have the same genitals, but they look like they have testicles. Can anyone help me determine whether they are actually girls, as they were advertised, or if the're males?

P.S. I apologise if it's not exactly clear to see, I don't have a great camera.

Welcome to the forum! Mouse Wave

The second picture definitely does appear to be male. I can't tell on the first, but if they both look the same it's safe to say they're both males.

If the are both males, is it still safe to keep them together? At current I only have one cage. They seemingly haven't fought once and are very close. So is it still okay for them to stay together or should I separate them?

We don't often recommend letting male fancy mice live together. I would work on getting another cage so you can either separate now or be prepared to separate if they start fighting. How old are they?
Even if they appear to be doing ok now, they can turn on each other in the blink of an eye, and if you're not around to separate them they could get seriously injured or killed.

They're about three months old now.
Thanks for all the help, by the way

I agree with everything Peachy is saying... Except are you sure they are fancy mice? I mean, I can't tell for sure since the picture isn't top quality, but the one on the ground in the second picture has big eyes like an ASF. Just wanted to comment on that... I could be wrong but that's just what I saw

I did a bit of research and I think they might actually be ASF mice

Hello there, @RDPro! Mouse Wave
I'm certain they are both males, too, and yes, those are definitely ASF rats (aka Natal mice). With that species of mice(?), I'm pretty sure the males can be comfortably housed together! Good vibes

Mind me asking who told you they were fancy mice, and how much did you pay for them? =) There's a pet shop close by, kind of, to me that has Natal mice, and they're bred for only feeders, and are about the price of the feeder/normal pet mice Petco sells. I actually want to get a couple when my mice die, maybe. BUT, I have read they love chewing anything they can (plastic included), and that most of them aren't very nice (they're known to bite a lot). How are yours, personality-wise, when you handle them? Love

Well, it's good to know I don't have to seperate them. They absolutely love each other! I haven't fully hand tamed them yet, or made alot of progress in doing so, yet they do tend to nip my fingers a bit if my hand is too close. They're quite friendly, otherwise. I think they were about £5 each. They are surprisingly not huge chewers, they have a few plastic toys and hides, and only really chew up cardboard and wood-based chews. Thankyou, everyone, for all of your help! Smile

That's good to hear! Tender
$5 sounds about like the normal price these days for those lil' guys. =)
That's nice! But maybe they need some time to adjust first? The more comfortable they are, the more their 'true colors' will shine, lol. =D
You are very welcome, and thank you for telling me a little more about your little guys; I'm hoping to get a couple one day, if possible. Very Happy
