She'll be okay... right?
- Talk of how feeder mice are being treated...:
- I went to a reptile expo with my dad today, because he loves reptiles and I think they are interesting to see. I tried to pass the booth with feeders, but I just couldn't. I saw that table with cages overcrowded full of mice and rats, and I just had to go see what I could do. I watched the people at the booth for a while, and I was extremely saddened by what I saw. When the person who ran the booth picked them up and threw them in bins as people were buying them, they would scream, I could hear it, a very loud cry/squeak.
I asked to buy one, because I have room for 2 girls. They told me they couldn't sell me one as a pet (They knew I was buying the mouse as a pet because I wanted a specific gender), then we asked why, and they said "Ummmm.... Because it's a feeder". Lol, then we said "What's the difference", and they said "I just can't sell them as pets, are you buying it as a feeder?"... We had to lie and say we were buying her as a feeder, and finally I was allowed to purchase her. They said that they *think* she was female, but the cage they were in was mixed.
I tried to double-check, and I'm pretty sure she's female as well, but I'll post sexing photos later just to be sure... She's extremely young, I would say she is about 20-23 days old, so I'm pretty sure she can't possibly be pregnant. She's really small, I would guess 15 grams or less. I saw her chewing on a lab block that they threw in with her when I bought her, so I'm pretty sure she can eat solids, but does she need milk too? I don't know how that works, do they need to gradually transition to eating just solids? They had younger mice, but I got this age because they were eating solids and were without mothers, as I wouldn't want to take a baby mouse away from her mommy.
I just want to know if she'll be okay, I hope I didn't get too young of a mouse. She drank some water from a dropper, so I know she can drink okay too.
Here she is grooming:

Awww, what a beautiful and lucky girl
I don't have experience in young mice, but I would think since she was eating solid foods ok, then she should be alright.
I'm sure someone with more knowledge on babies will give you some good advice if you need to be doing anything else.
Did you pick a name yet? She sure looks sweet.

Just read the part about how the feeder mice and rats were being treated. Makes me so very sad to hear. I'm glad you were able to save your new girl from that horrible fate.

I'm wondering now if she doesn't know how to shell seeds, I put one of the lab blocks that they gave me with her in the cage, along with the seed mix I have (Sunseed Vita Prima Parakeet), but all she's eating is the lab block. She carries the lab block with her places and snacks on it

No name yet! Feel free to suggest some though

She'll be okay, she looks healthy. Just give her extra protein, cooked chicken or egg, even live mealworms if she'll take them. They start eating and drinking really well after they open their eyes and she looks at least 3 weeks, so i wouldn't worry.
She's beautiful.

Thank you Scaredy! I have some dried turkey treats I give the hamsters, I'll give her some of those! My hamster's lab blocks are really high in protein too, so I'll give her a couple. I can try live mealworms as well, not sure how she'll react lol.scaredymouse wrote:She'll be okay, she looks healthy. So I just weighed her.. She's only 15 grams! So tiny and sweet!
Edit: Just gave her some protein-rich foods as well. She liked the lab block and dried turkey, but she looked very offended when I put a mealworm in front of her
I ended up giving the mealworm to Rocky instead, so he was happy!

Just wanted to update - she's gained a few grams and as of last Friday night weighs 18, so she's growing well so far! She seems to be enjoying all the lab blocks and dried turkey I've been giving her
