Need help with bloody ear
Two (of the
of my, otherwise healthy, mice have a bloody ear that they scratch all the time. It is not the outer ear but more inside. Any ideas what this could be and how to treat it? The others have been fine.

Re: Need help with bloody ear
Hello.
My Lydia had something similar to that--well, she scratched her face a lot and the fur thinned near one of her eyes, and then one day I walked in the room and looked in their tank, and there was blood on the left side of her face! I thought it was a bad wound (for a mouse in particular), and that one of the others had attacked her and made her bleed, but turns out, I do not think that was the case anymore; I think she might have had mites or lice...and if not one of those, I think it was probably allergies to something (possibly the food). She did end up dying within a month because of a fairly rapid-growing [tumor], I believe].
And as for how to treat it, if it's allergies, try seeing what she's allergic to and keep her in a cage by herself during this time. First, change the food and wait maybe a week or few days or so. If it's not that, then change the bedding--what type of bedding do you use? (Actually, the more I think about it, the less I'm thinking it's an allergy).
So perhaps, if possible, you could take her to the vet first and they should give you some antibiotics or something to treat the lice or mites, if that's what she has.
There are more knowledgeable members on here about this kind of stuff, but I'm not one of them.

Re: Need help with bloody ear
I have changed the bedding from forest soil to Aspen shavings and treating them with Neosporin

I hope it clears up! Did you go to the vet to get a final verdict and he suggested that?
But, for the record, aspen wood shavings is a no-no. It can carry lice or mites.
The forest soil...I don't know. If you can, try buying a paper-based bedding (such as Carefresh or something rather), or even make your own--it's not hard!

Re: Need help with bloody ear
Put her on shredded newspaper bedding and see if that helps. Its the least allergenic bedding. I would also recommend against putting her in her own cage unless you have substantial reason to believe another of your mice was the culprit. It certainly wont help her.
