Seeds in Feces?

Post by River on Sat 10 Mar 2018, 11:15 am

Graham has some visible seeds in her feces. From what I understand they usually grind seeds up, so is this normal?

She is the mouse who gave herself an abscess shovelling food into her mouth so perhaps she just isn't stopping to chew properly.

Anyways, should I be concerned about this? She is already on antibiotic so I assume if something's wrong it'll be fixed up but I'm just curious as to if this is normal or not.

I hit "send" on the last message in a hurry so I could take a German shepherd for a walk.  Then I got back and remembered I forgot this part:

Whole seeds?  That would indicate she isn't chewing them at all.  Hmmm...  Maybe the jaw is sore from that abscess that was next to it.  (My right foot got cellulitis from an un-noticed toe puncture wound back at the end of summer 2011.  After a few precarious and painful days, the soft tissue infection was treated successfully overnight by giving it a copper wrap while I slept a few hours, but that was already after the infection had affected bones.  I can still predict weather sometimes from a surge of aching in the bones of that foot.)  Or maybe Graham needs her teeth checked -- the grinders too, not just the incisors.

[OOPS!!! -- I edited my previous message instead of typing a new one, so my original stuff about Cheerios/Wheaties, noodles, and baby porridge, as well as checking on her gut flora in case stress or antibiotics are messing with that balance ... that's gone! Time for Merci to take a nap.]

She does eat baby cereal and cheerios and raw whole wheat spaghetti. I'll add more to her diet! She's also eating mealworms, fresh veggies, etc...I'm sure she can at least have yogurt drops from the baby section, those are very loved and have actual yogurt. They're closed today so I can't call until Monday. The vet is aware of it, though, as she did leave some feces on them and they didn't seem concerned at all, so I reckon it's pretty normal for her situation.

They look like whole or mostly whole seeds (the smaller, round ones like millet), but I haven't done a full scale, break it up investigation. The first time she had an abscess vet said probably gave it to herself eating too quickly, so if she doesn't take the time to chew, that's certainly possible.

Her incisors look fine, and though I can't see her other teeth, she does chew bigger treats like gerber puffs, so I don't think her teeth are a problem. No pain when her cheeks are pet, either. Hm...I'll find a vet I can message online I suppose. I don't think the emergency vet would appreciate a call about this.

Note to future readers:  I had something more to add that I forgot earlier, but I edited my earlier post instead of adding on another comment.  You'll have to look there, further up the list, now.  I'm going to blame today's ditz on caffeine:  I have zero tolerance, but I've been sipping on a really watered-down room-temp glass of instant Bustelo and my hyperactivity is back in town.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program. . .

As long as she's eating, and you have the softer-foods backup plan, I don't think checking the teeth is emergency-worthy.  I'm just brainstorming about why she wouldn't chew her food.  Mice are such micro-nibblers, after all.  Maybe it's just another manifestation of whatever particular stress she's laboring through.

Thanks! Yes, she does seem fine. Weird thing is, she's at a steady weight despite of it too. I guess because it isn't in all of her feces (a lot, but not all), it isn't affecting her too much? Or maybe it's because she eats other, softer foods too. Either way she's a consistent 31 grams still so I won't panic yet!

Just called the vet! The vet said it's related to medicine and some yogurt would help with that.

Side note but I am so awkward with phone calls. After a phone call I always worry that I hung up while they were talking despite the whole 'thank you so much, goodbye!' thing I do. Undecided
