Citrus is dangerous for mice, but why? What does it do that makes it dangerous? Just wondering

Far as i know, it's not poisonous or anything, however it is very high is sugar and the acidity can irritate the mouth and stomach. Furthermore, I believe it can also be hard on the kidneys.
