Well.
I return after a few weeks away from the forum with some mixed news. I went out of town a few weeks ago and had a friend take care of my animals for me. I told her most of them are friendly and that she was most welcome to interact with them, but the mice are skittish with strangers and should be left alone. Apparently Hollow's soft, pretty coat was too much to resist. Long story short, she escaped and disappeared. My friend tore my home apart looking for her, but she was nowhere to be seen. When I came back, she told me what happened, and that she felt so bad she went out and picked me up another mouse. She said she knew it wouldn't replace the one she lost, but she wasn't sure how else to make up for it.
I really don't know how I feel right now. I'm devastated that Hollow's gone. She and I had been making great progress with her bonding. I don't know what to hope for, you know? I know she's probably not coming back. If she's okay, she's in for a rough life ahead of her. I live in New England back woods. It's dangerous here for a mouse...
Anyway. I'll show you guys a few pictures of the new girl, end things on a bit of a lighter note.

My daughter and I decided to call her Blueberry. She's quite young, seems to be just coming out of that stage where baby mice hurl themselves away from anything threatening. My friend said she bought her at the local pet store that only stocks small animals from the local humane society, since she knows I have a thing for rescues. Pumpkin came from the same place.
Having her to concentrate on had kind-of helped to take my mind off of Hollow most of the time. She's quite skittish, so bonding's been slow and steady. I've been back and working with her for about a week now, and today was the first day she didn't launch herself across the tank when I put my hand in to change her food. She even came up to give me a very nervous sniff. I left her a little pretzel treat for her courage.

Re: Well.
I have great news on both fronts.
Blueberry, while quite wild, seems to be starting to come around. I can "play" with things around her tank without her running into a hiding place now. When I brought her out for bonding time today, she crawled all over my arms, I think she may have forgotten I was a person. When I wiggled my fingers, she warily crawled over to sniff and test-nibble. At one point, she looked up toward my face and started thumping her tail against my chest. I was going to put her back, but she jumped up to my shoulder(she's an incredible little athlete!) and started investigating my hair and face. Progress only happens on her terms, it seems!
And my little Hollow. After being gone over a week with no signs of her, Hollow revealed to us that she's still here, and she's taking care of herself just fine, thank you. On Fridays, we leave a little early for work, so my boyfriend's mother stops by and puts our dragons to bed for us. This past Friday, when she let herself into our bedroom, she found Hollow sleeping on my pillow. She was too fast to be caught, but my boyfriend's mother saw her dive under my closet door. My bf and I pulled our room apart to look for her but we just found droppings and food hoards. We have holes in our walls and a hole leading outside in the back of our closet but she's been here the whole time. She's smart enough to stay where she's got heat and food. I'm going to be getting some live traps this week and setting them up in my bedroom. Hopefully I can find something to entice her in.
I'm very hopeful now. I feel s lot better. She' going to have to be tamed all over again, but I really don't care. We've had rats in our house this winter, so I thought she was probably killed. My smart little baby. My boyfriend's taken to calling her the Hollowraptor(because she's a clever girl!). I feel like I can actually appreciate Blueberry without feeling so guilty now. We just have to catch Hollow. I'll post updates as I'm able!

Re: Well.
Look what I found~

Last night, my boyfriend and I heard some scratching around under our bed. He turned the light on while I pulled the mattress back and there she was, just sitting on top of my old Gundam boxes. She didn't run. She didn't even flinch. I was going to by the live traps today, but there was no need. She came right to me. I was expecting to have to tame her from scratch, or worse. I thought she was going to be wild. I was fully expecting at least one good bite when we caught her, but no. She seemed happy to see me. She kept rubbing herself all over my hands. I think she was done with her little adventure, and just wanted to go home.
I've put her in a KK for now, until she rejoins her colony. I gave her one of their houses directly from the colony tank so it smells like home. She's so skinny! Her markings are all the same, but its like her fur was stretched over a completely different mouse. Last night she spent a while going back and forth between the food and water, consuming as much as she could. She'd take some of her favorite food pieces back into her house and munch on them there, sparking the whole time. This morning when I checked on her, she already had a little belly started again. I gave her a few extra pieces of her favorite puppy kibble.
I'm so relieved to have her safe again.

Re: Well.
That’s awesome!
I would definitely quarantine her before reintroducing. She may have picked something up if she ran into wild mice or could even be pregnant. In any case, this will give her time to eat her fill and recover at her own pace. I’m so glad you caught her!

Re: Well.
Thank you guys for all your support and well wishes! These past two weeks have been rough. Not just for me, apparently- I kept catching my coworkers grinning at me today, and my boss said it was good to see me back to my usual self. I didn't realize I'd been acting so different, haha! My boyfriend said he's noticed the health and wellbeing of the colony tends to have a huge impact on me. I can't help it. I love my girls, I can't stand to see any of them suffer. It was driving me crazy wondering where Hollow was sleeping, what she was eating, how she was finding water. I definitely do feel like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders.
I was thinking she may have picked something up, since we've had wild mice in the house before, but it doesn't seem like she came into contact with anything at all while she was loose. I don't think she even left our bedroom. I checked her over thoroughly when I got home from work today, and there's not a single scratch on her. I definitely still want to keep her by herself for at least a week though, so she can start gaining some weight back and get some rest, and also so I can keep an eye on her. She may not have any visible ailments, but who knows what she was eating or where she was getting water from. I want to watch her just to make sure, but it seems like she's perfectly okay

Re: Well.
I’m probably being overly cautious by suggesting it but it’s better than inadvertently passing some illness on to the whole colony.
