How to introduce a new mouse

Post by fancymice on Mon 02 Apr 2018, 5:34 pm

I’m getting a third mouse today; and I was wondering how to introduce her to two mice I have already had for about 5 days? I don’t want them to fight or anything; so what’s the best way to introduce them? Thank you

make sure you keep them COMPLETLY separate for a week or 2 when you get the third mouse, just to make sure the new mouse isnt sick or anything. then move some bedding into each others cages and switch some toys and their wheels around throughout a week or so. Make sure you also start introducing them in a neutral territory such as an empty storage container or a clean dry bathtub. just put all 3 of the mice in together with no toys and just a small amount of food and water at first, make sure you keep an eye on them and be prepared for a bit of squabbling (chasing, bum sniffing, and squeaking) if any of the mice get too aggressive and draw blood have a box or something nearby to take the aggressor out. if all goes well continue this and add in a clean toy each time. you will get there eventually. if a mouse however does draw blood make sure you do not continue the bonding until the wound has healed completely (at least 2 weeks)

there are also a bunch of videos on youtube that give some tips and things EDIT: there are also some topics on this forum for more information.

hope it all goes well Wink

First you’ll need to quarantine your new mouse for at least 3 weeks. This will prevent spreading any possible illnesses and to be sure your new girl isn’t pregnant. Also this gives you 3 weeks for one-on-one taming sessions with your new mouse and get to know them.  Tame mice tend to do better with intros.

There’s s more on quarantine and taming in these stickied threads:

Will this work for introducing a new mouse to 4 mice? (Just putting them all in one neutral territory?)

Yes, this method usually works for most introductions. Of course, there’s always some risk things won’t work out - regardless of the number of mice.
