Red discharge around one eye(?)
Recently I started finding red discharge around the left eye on my girl Helena. She'll clean it off eventually once she grooms herself that evening after waking up and has been a good eater, very active, and I haven't noticed her sneezing at all.
I know rats may get a substance in similar color called porphyrin around their eyes and nose after they wake up or are stressed out, is it the same with mice?
I've been using a cotton swab to gently clean the area (distilled water and salt; a saline solution with a 1tsp to 1pt ratio) if she doesn't get to it. Do you guys have any idea what it might be? I've been worried about her even though she looks otherwise healthy, she's just so sweet and I'd hate for her to get sick. I'm planning on taking her to a vet soon if it doesn't clear up.

mice don't really get porphyrin like rats do, definitely something a vet should look at

Mice do produce porphyrin, but usually when we’re seeing it it’s due to stress or illness.
An appointment with a vet wouldn’t hurt to be safe.

Good news! I went to my vet on Monday and Helena's eye has cleared up significantly, she's been waking up with little to no porphyrin staining and isn't squinting nearly as much as she was initially.
